Speech Language Pathologist participates in the process of development, implementation, and coordination of the speech language therapy program. Screening, evaluation, therapeutic intervention, consultation, and transition planning are provided for clients identified with or suspected of having disabilities that interfere with their ability to communicate, socially interact, participate in academics and prevocational activities, and access the community. Professional judgment and clinical knowledge are used to evaluate, develop, and implement individualized programming relevant to IEP objectives based on communication performance deficits in the areas of receptive, expressive, and pragmatic language, as well as total communication development. Speech therapist is part of a multi-disciplinary clinical team (ST, OT, PT, BCBA, and educational/residential team) who regularly collaborates with all student's team members. Speech therapists are responsible for direct speech and language services of a reasonable caseload, as well as potential direct supervision of speech language pathology assistant(s). The speech therapist is expected to independently review outcomes and modify intervention programs as needed. Clinical reasoning and professional judgment within the SLP scope of practice and ethical guidelines are essential to ensuring the safety of students and protecting liability of the company and the therapist.
Primary Duties
- Evaluates the student's communication profile and formulates speech and language recommendations as indicated through a variety of standardized and informal assessments, skilled observation, inventory checklists, record review, and interviews. Triennial assessments are completed in compliance with IEP guidelines.
- Develops functional and measurable communication-based goals and objectives based upon student skill strengths and deficits.
- Directs and guides evidence-based intervention to target individualized objectives, in accordance with IEP documents.
- Actively participates in student IEP development process, including planning and annual IEP meetings, to discuss student updates, progress, family concerns, and propose new goals and objectives in coordination with the educational and clinical team.
- Provides and/or supervises implementation of direct and consultative speech and language services as outlined in student service delivery grids.
- Maintains, reviews, and tracks students' overall progress on a consistent basis using data collection, completes quarterly progress reports in a timely manner, and modifies treatment plans (i.e. materials, targets, etc.) accordingly.
- Regular collaboration and consultation with therapeutic, clinical, and educational team members to coordinate care, make ongoing and appropriate recommendations, and ensure carryover of recommendations across settings.
- Trains speech therapy support personnel (SLPA), direct care staff and other support personnel on specific goals/objectives, support strategies, and data collection for generalization of communication skills.
- Oversees programming and maintenance of low-to-high-tech AAC systems for students on caseload.
- Participates in student-intake processes, including transition planning, observations, etc. and consults/collaborates with team members in developing communication intervention plans.
- Provides legal and ethical supervision of speech language therapy assistant assuming responsibility for the individuals served by assistant.
- Follows all time-keeping policies and procedures; dependable and punctual.
- Maintain all staff mandated education and training including CPR/First Aid, Safety Care, as well as state and national licensures and requirements.
Qualifications
- Have successfully completed and graduated from an accredited speech language therapy professional program recognized by American Speech Hearing Association (ASHA) and have acquired certification in clinical competency (CCC).
- Active Certification by American Speech Hearing Association (ASHA)
- Two years' experience as a Speech Therapist; experience with students on the autism spectrum preferred.
- Current license by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Allied Health Professionals
- Valid Driver's License
