Crate Builder / Material Handler

The Crate Builder / Material Handler plays a key role in supporting production and shipping operations by accurately handling inventory, assembling custom shipping crates, and preparing finished products for shipment. This position combines hands-on work with wood and tools with careful documentation and inventory control to ensure products are protected, organized, and delivered on time.

Responsibilities

• Maintain accurate inventory by identifying, labeling, and placing materials and supplies in designated stock locations.
• Record inventory locations and movements to support inventory accuracy and traceability.
• Locate materials and supplies by pulling and verifying items listed on production and sales orders.
• Handle materials and supplies carefully to maintain inventory accuracy during all movements and transactions.
• Receive credit-return materials by verifying item types and quantities and returning them to the appropriate stock locations.
• Prepare finished products for shipment by identifying, pulling, packing, crating, loading, and securely fastening items for transport.
• Document outgoing shipments by accurately recording units and materials shipped.
• Assemble and build shipping crates for finished products using wood, hand tools, and power tools to ensure safe and secure transport.
• Measure materials accurately to build crates to the required dimensions and specifications.
• Operate and maintain material-handling equipment by completing pre-use inspections and performing basic operator-level repairs as needed.
• Follow safety procedures while using hand tools, power tools, and material-handling equipment.
• Keep the work area organized, clean, and free of hazards to support an efficient and safe warehouse and light manufacturing environment.

Essential Skills

• Experience using hand tools and power tools to build, assemble, or repair items, either in a work setting or through relevant personal projects.
• Ability to build and assemble wooden crates or similar structures with attention to detail and quality.
• Strong measuring skills to ensure materials are cut and assembled to correct dimensions.
• Material handling experience, including pulling, moving, and organizing materials and supplies.
• Inventory handling experience, including labeling, stocking, and recording locations of materials and products.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds safely and repeatedly as part of daily duties.
• Ability to complete basic pre-use inspections and operator-level repairs on material-handling equipment.
• Attention to detail when verifying materials, quantities, and documentation for inventory and shipments.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience in crate building, carpentry, or similar hands-on work with wood is highly beneficial.
• Experience working in a warehouse or light manufacturing environment.
• Comfort working with a variety of tools and equipment and describing the processes used.
• Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks such as inventory, crate building, and shipping preparation.
• Reliability and punctuality to support production schedules and shipping deadlines.

Work Environment

This role is based in an open, clean warehouse and light manufacturing facility with approximately 30 team members. The position follows a daytime schedule, typically working either 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. or 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., depending on production needs. Work involves regular use of hand tools, power tools, and material-handling equipment in a production and shipping setting. The environment is hands-on and active, with a focus on safety, cleanliness, and efficient material flow.

Job Type & Location: This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Dundee, IL.

Pay and Benefits: The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $23.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
