Commercial HVAC/R Service Technician

Location: Columbus, Ohio

Job Type: Full-time, hourly/non-exempt

Pay: $28–$55 per hour, based on experience, plus performance bonus opportunities

Mechanical Optimizers is seeking an experienced Commercial HVAC/R Service Technician to join our Columbus service team. We provide HVAC service and installation solutions for commercial, industrial, and institutional customers throughout the region.

This position independently diagnoses, repairs, maintains, and optimizes commercial HVAC/R systems while delivering responsive, professional customer service. The ideal candidate is an experienced technician with strong diagnostic skills who can work independently, communicate clearly, and complete accurate documentation.

Key Responsibilities

• Diagnose and repair commercial and industrial heating, cooling, airflow, electrical, controls, and refrigeration systems.
• Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, repairs, equipment replacements, and startup checks according to company standards and manufacturer specifications.
• Troubleshoot electrical and mechanical problems using wiring diagrams, test instruments, gauges, meters, and diagnostic procedures.
• Verify system performance following repairs by testing airflow, static pressure, refrigerant operation, temperature split, combustion, electrical performance, and other applicable operating conditions.
• Clearly explain system conditions, repair recommendations, maintenance needs, and next steps to customers.
• Accurately document findings, recommendations, parts used, work performed, time, and completed tasks in the company’s field-service software.
• Communicate relevant customer and equipment information to service management, dispatch, sales, and other team members.
• Respond to scheduled after-hours and emergency service calls as part of the on-call rotation.
• Maintain service-vehicle stock, manage parts and warranty returns, and coordinate with dispatch and parts support.
• Identify legitimate repair, replacement, and system-improvement opportunities based on customer needs.
• Reduce callbacks by following established diagnostic, startup, commissioning, and quality-control procedures.
• Recognize and report unsafe or hazardous conditions.
• Support apprentices and less-experienced technicians through field coaching and the sharing of safe, effective work practices.
• Participate in company meetings, safety programs, and training.

Qualifications

• Minimum of five years of experience diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining commercial or industrial HVAC/R systems.
• EPA Section 608 certification required.
• Strong electrical and mechanical diagnostic abilities.
• Ability to read wiring diagrams and use HVAC test instruments effectively.
• Experience with commercial equipment startup, commissioning, preventive maintenance, and repair.
• Strong organizational, documentation, communication, and customer-service skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage daily service assignments efficiently.
• Comfortable using tablets, field-service software, and digital forms.
• Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
• Additional HVAC, controls, NATE, or manufacturer certifications are preferred.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

• Work in indoor and outdoor environments, including rooftops, mechanical rooms, crawl spaces, construction areas, and occupied customer facilities.
• Work in varying weather and temperature conditions.
• Regularly lift, carry, push, or pull equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds, with assistance for heavier items.
• Work from ladders, lifts, and elevated surfaces as required.
• Safely use hand tools, power tools, gauges, meters, refrigerant equipment, and mobile technology.
• Comply with PPE, driving, electrical safety, lockout/tagout, refrigerant-handling, and jobsite safety requirements.
