Overview The School of Engineering Medicine, in collaboration with Texas A&M College of Engineering, Texas A&M School of Medicine and Houston Methodist Hospital, offers the ENMED program—a blended curriculum that provides a Doctor of Medicine and Master of Engineering degree in four years. The Assistant Research Scientist will conduct research in his/her field of expertise, supporting this interdisciplinary mission. Qualifications Required Education and Experience Ph.D. in immunology, molecular biology, genetics, parasitology, cancer biology, or a related field. Advanced knowledge in molecular biology techniques and substantial experience working in a biosafety level 2 laboratory. Preferred Qualifications Hands‑on direct experience in molecular biology, flow cytometric analyses, and cell culture. Solid understanding of fundamental molecular biology and immunology. Experience handling mice (preferred but not essential). Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to multi‑task and work cooperatively with others. Demonstrated skills in effective and clear communication. Knowledge of laboratory maintenance and equipment. Knowledge and proficiency with computers and relevant software. Responsibilities Research Explore the landscape of atypical T cells, focusing on Group1 CD1 (CD1a, CD1b, CD1c)-restricted T cells and Group2 CD1 (CD1d)-restricted natural killer T (NKT) cells, using cutting‑edge tools such as the Group1 CD1‑transgenic human immune system (HIS) mouse model. Investigate malaria research by identifying parasite‑derived lipid antigens recognized by these T cells. Advance the Group1 CD1‑TG HIS mouse model by improving transduced plasmids encoding human hematopoietic cytokines and refining plasmid construction methodologies. Data Analysis Conduct various statistical analyses of experimental data. General Laboratory Operation Operate all instrumentation required for projects and compile data, making and recording observations and measurements. Coordinate with the Principal Investigator to write and present scientific papers, grant proposals, and manuscripts for publication. Collaborate on joint projects with faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and technicians. Meetings Participate in weekly lab meetings with the center and other departments and in joint projects involving the laboratory team. Physical Requirements Work in a laboratory and animal facility environment. Stand, sit, and perform repetitive fine‑motor tasks such as pipetting for extended periods. Lift, carry, push, or pull up to 25lb of laboratory supplies, reagent boxes, equipment, or animal cages. Bend, reach, stoop, and move between work areas as required. Operate standard laboratory equipment: biosafety cabinets, centrifuges, incubators, microscopes. Handle biological materials (human and animal specimens) and chemicals in accordance with institutional safety policies. Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) and have adequate vision, hearing, and communication abilities.
