Structural Engineer

We are seeking a licensed Structural Engineer to serve as the internal structural engineering expert within a growing architecture and engineering practice. You will support healthcare, institutional, and commercial building projects from concept through construction while helping expand in-house structural capabilities. This highly visible role is ideal for an experienced Professional Engineer who wants to shape and grow a structural engineering practice within an established design firm and work closely with architects, MEP engineers, contractors, and consultants.

Responsibilities

• Design and produce stamped structural construction documents for commercial, institutional, and healthcare projects.
• Perform structural analysis, member sizing, and foundation design appropriate to project requirements and site conditions.
• Coordinate the structural scope within Revit/BIM environments and participate in multidisciplinary coordination meetings.
• Collaborate with architects and project teams on structural system selection, bay spacing, floor-to-floor heights, and lateral system strategies.
• Prepare structural specifications and ensure they align with project performance and code requirements.
• Review shop drawings, submittals, and RFIs, and provide timely responses during construction administration.
• Coordinate with geotechnical consultants regarding foundation recommendations and soil-bearing assumptions.
• Conduct site visits and field observations to verify compliance with construction documents and design intent.
• Partner with architects, MEP engineers, consultants, contractors, and clients throughout all phases of project execution.
• Support business development efforts by contributing to proposal preparation and participating in client presentations.
• Establish structural standards, specifications, details, and best practices as the firm’s engineering capabilities continue to grow.
• Serve as a technical resource and internal structural authority throughout all phases of project delivery.
• Take ownership of work products, including stamping and sealing structural documents, while balancing hands-on design and leadership responsibilities.

Essential Skills

• Licensed Structural Engineer with 7+ years of experience designing commercial, healthcare, and institutional facilities.
• Active Professional Engineer (PE) license, with Michigan PE or reciprocity eligibility required.
• Strong proficiency in Revit for structural modeling and coordination within a BIM environment.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD for drafting and detailing structural documents.
• Experience using structural analysis software such as RISA, RAM, ETABS, or equivalent tools.
• Demonstrated experience producing stamped structural construction documents.
• Proven ability to perform structural analysis, member sizing, and foundation design across multiple building types.
• Experience coordinating structural work with architects and MEP teams on multidisciplinary projects.
• Experience supporting projects through construction administration, including responding to RFIs and reviewing shop drawings and submittals.
• Ability to work independently as a primary structural resource while collaborating effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
• Strong client-facing communication skills, including the ability to participate in presentations and project meetings.
• Experience with steel, concrete, masonry, light-gauge, and heavy timber structures.
• Knowledge of applicable building codes and standards relevant to structural engineering practice.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Structural, Civil, or Architectural Engineering.
• Master’s degree in a related engineering discipline is preferred.
• Experience working on healthcare or institutional projects is highly desirable.
• Experience reviewing RFIs, shop drawings, and submittals for structural scope.
• Familiarity with masonry design and detailing in building structures.
• Experience working within BIM-driven project environments and coordinating with multiple disciplines.
• Entrepreneurial mindset with a willingness to help build and lead a growing structural engineering practice.
• Comfort working as a team of one initially on the structural side, while leveraging support from internal teams and external consultants.
• Willingness to take ownership of technical decisions, project delivery, and the development of standards and best practices.

Work Environment

The role is based in a hybrid work environment with four days in-person and one day working from home each week. You will work within a multidisciplinary architecture and engineering team located in Royal Oak, Michigan. Structural engineers collaborate closely with architects, MEP professionals, consultants, contractors, and clients throughout all phases of design and construction. The environment is highly collaborative and fast-paced, offering exposure to complex healthcare, institutional, and commercial projects. You will have the opportunity to take significant ownership of technical decisions, influence project delivery methods, and help shape the firm’s structural engineering standards and practices.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Royal Oak, MI.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $48.00 - $62.50/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
