Principal/ Director of Secondary Education

POSITION SUMMARY

The Principal / Director of Secondary Education serves as the chief instructional and operational leader for Harding Fine Arts Academy's secondary programs, spanning grades 6 through 12. This position is responsible for setting and sustaining a compelling vision for high levels of student achievement across both the middle school and high school, strategically implementing the school's mission, and ensuring that all secondary students benefit from a rigorous, arts-integrated educational experience. The Principal / Director of Secondary works as part of the Superintendent’s Leadership Team along with their Elementary counterpart while serving as the leader of the Secondary Leadership Team. The Director oversees the full instructional program for grades 6–12, leads and evaluates secondary assistant principals, and manages the building, maintenance, and general operations of both school facilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Instructional Leadership — Grades 6–12 Serve as the primary instructional leader for the entire secondary program (grades 6–12), articulating a clear and compelling vision grounded in rigorous academics and arts integration. Observe and evaluate teaching methods and learning materials across the middle school and high school to standardize curricula, assess instructional quality, and identify areas for growth. Provide ongoing, research-based professional development for all secondary faculty, grounded in analysis of school-wide and grade-level data. Model and promote the continuous use of data to inform instructional practice and drive decision‑making at all levels. Foster an environment where staff and faculty hold each other collectively accountable for achieving high levels of student achievement. Personnel Leadership and Evaluation Lead, supervise, and formally evaluate all secondary assistant principals (middle school and high school), providing clear, actionable feedback, resources, and professional growth support. Manage all secondary personnel effectively through appropriate delegation, strategic planning, and consistent evaluation. Effectively evaluate teachers’ classroom management, instructional practice, professional development pursuits, and interpersonal and leadership skills; identify high‑ and low‑effectiveness performers and provide differentiated support. Lead personnel recruitment, selection, onboarding, and retention for all secondary staff in collaboration with the Superintendent. Promote distributive leadership by building and supporting the capacity of assistant principals and instructional leaders throughout the secondary division. Building Operations and Facilities Management Oversee the daily operations, physical plant management, and maintenance needs of both the middle school and high school facilities. Serve as the primary administrator responsible for building safety, security protocols, and emergency preparedness across secondary facilities. Coordinate with facilities and maintenance staff to ensure all building systems, grounds, and equipment are properly maintained and meet applicable codes and standards. Manage procurement and stewardship of materials, equipment, and physical resources to support the educational program and operational continuity. School Culture and Community Relations Foster a positive, inclusive school climate across the secondary division by assessing school culture, communicating proactively with the community, and promoting respect for cultural diversity. Promote collaborative school/community relations by articulating the school’s mission, seeking community support, and cultivating strong relationships with all stakeholders. Confer with parents, students, and staff to address educational activities, school policies, and student behavioral or academic concerns. Serve as a visible, accessible leader across both campuses, maintaining consistent presence in classrooms, common areas, and extracurricular activities. Strategic Planning and Resource Management Manage all secondary school resources (fiscal, human capital, facilities, and equipment) to support student achievement goals and in full compliance with district and board policies. Lead strategic planning for the secondary division in alignment with the school’s overall mission and the Superintendent’s goals. Develop and monitor the secondary instructional budget, ensuring resources are allocated equitably and in support of identified priorities. Coordinate scheduling, course offerings, and staffing across grades 6–12 to maximize instructional time and meet the diverse needs of students. Compliance and Reporting Ensure all secondary programs operate in full compliance with applicable state law, OSDE guidelines, federal regulations, and school board policy. Prepare and submit required state and federal reports related to secondary instruction, staffing, and school performance within established deadlines. Maintain and communicate accurate records related to student discipline, attendance, staffing, and instructional programs.
