Responsibilities
- Arrive promptly at scheduled time for tour of duty and dressed in clothing appropriate with the nursing department dress code.
- Assist in opening and closing the nursing stations: Start up and shut down computers, perform and document temperature checks of the refrigerators, perform controls on office equipment, flush eye wash station weekly as per office protocol, open patient rooms and bathrooms, perform vaccine inventories when required.
- Post daily nursing assignment as indicated on monthly nursing schedule.
- Review patient charts for upcoming visits and highlight treatments and vaccines necessary on the day of the visit.
- Participate in daily huddle when necessary.
- Anticipate provider orders for the day, and plan nursing tasks appropriately.
- Obtain vital signs (temperature, pulse, respirations, and blood pressure) and chief complaint on all children, and document correctly in chart.
- Obtain growth measurements (height, weight, head circumference for children 2 and under, BMI) on all children here for well visits, and check that they are accurately plotted on the growth charts.
- Perform vision and hearing screenings when needed.
- Perform necessary screenings and surveys for children of all ages using established protocols, and score results when indicated.
- Obtain pulse ox and/or peak flow measurements on all children with respiratory symptoms or history of same.
- Perform capillary puncture as needed.
- Perform capillary puncture hemoglobin test.
- Perform capillary puncture glucose test.
- Perform capillary puncture lead test.
- Perform capillary puncture cholesterol test.
- Perform heel puncture and obtain blood for newborn screening panel and demonstrate proper method of sending to lab.
- Teach client correct method of obtaining a clean catch urine specimen.
- Demonstrate competence in applying a urine bag to obtain an infant urine specimen.
- Perform urinalysis and document correctly.
- Set up supplies and assist provider in obtaining catheterized urine specimen.
- Perform lab test controls on office cholesterol, strep, influenza, lead, and RSV tests, and any other tests performed in our office requiring controls, prior to starting a new lot.
- Perform rapid strep, rapid influenza, Covid, and RSV tests, and any other tests performed in our offices, and document correctly.
- Collect, prepare, and send laboratory samples not tested on the premises to appropriate laboratory, and call for courier pickup when needed.
- Document all lab tests in chart and on superbill.
- Perform a medicated nebulizer treatment for child when ordered by provider.
- Demonstrate competence in using and checking amount of oxygen in tanks.
- Assist provider in administering oxygen therapy to child when necessary.
- Provide parent with nebulizer to take home, and complete required paperwork.
- Perform ear lavage when ordered by provider.
- Assist provider to keep on time throughout the shift.
- Communicate with all co-workers in a professional manner while on duty.
- Be competent in all MA responsibilities, and when the MAs are busy or absent, perform them as needed to maintain daily flow of patient care in a timely manner.
- Delegate responsibilities to MAs that are within the MA scope of practice.
- Be familiar with current immunization requirements, anticipate provider's immunization orders, prepare and administer them with proper technique, and document appropriately.
- Be accountable for all vaccines personally given and participate in the accounting process for the vaccines administered in our office.
- Be familiar with and perform all CDC and state of CT requirements for vaccine storage and handling.
- Be familiar with, prepare, administer, and document PO, PR, IM, SC, and intranasal/inhaled medications per provider order and per office policies.
- Complete school, day care, and camp forms accurately and in a timely manner.
- Communicate professionally and empathetically with patients and families.
- After training classes provided at CPM, perform telephone triage according to the Barton-Schmitt protocol, and document appropriately.
- Return phone calls to parents in a timely manner using proper telephone etiquette.
- Have knowledge of HIPAA and maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
- Document laboratory results in chart in correct location.
- Ensure that the provider is informed of laboratory results in a timely manner.
- Notify parent or adult patient of laboratory results when indicated by provider and document in chart.
- Assist providers with suturing, derma bonding, wound care, EMLA cream application, ear piercing, wart treatments, fluoride varnish, and any other procedures performed in our office.
- Assist patient/parent in arranging for procedures in other facilities, such as x ray, MRI, and CT scan, ultrasound, and document arrangements in chart.
- Be familiar with location and use of emergency equipment and medications on the unit and assist provider when they are needed.
- Perform inventory check of emergency equipment and floor stock medications when assigned.
- Keep Lead Nurse updated on all pertinent patient conditions, floor activity, or staff time changes according to policy and procedure.
- Participate in training on Standard Precautions (OSHA).
- Practice Standard Precautions according to OSHA requirements at all times while on duty.
- Select proper barrier/personal protective equipment for potentially infectious situations.
- Perform correct method of hand washing.
- Identify location and verbalize proper use of the following equipment: eye wash, fire extinguishers, sharps disposal containers, hazardous waste containers.
- Locate emergency evacuation sites for the office and be familiar with the office evacuation policy.
- Attend and complete office CPR training when offered.
- Attend and participate in nursing and office meetings and in-services when offered.
- Document using electronic medical records.
- Demonstrate proper use and care of all equipment for electronic medical records.
- Be an active team member in our work toward Patient Centered Medical Home Recognition by NCQA.
Skills and Qualifications
- To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty completely and satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the required functions.
- Knowledge of English (Apothecaries) and metric measurements and how to convert between them. Ability to utilize mathematical skills to calculate medication doses.
- Ability to learn and comfortably utilize basic computer skills for daily patient care
- Ability to prioritize daily duties, urgent and emergent situations, define problems, collect data, and draw valid conclusions.
- Excellent communication, both written and verbal
- Comprehensive knowledge of Pediatric nursing
- Comfortable working in a fast paced environment
- EMR experience. Specifically Office Practicum
- Interpersonal skills to interact with patients and families
Education and Experience
- High school diploma
- Current CT State License, LPN
- Five years of professional nursing experience in a pediatric care setting
- CPR/AED certification
Work Schedule
- 1 evening per week, 1 weekend per month, FT and PT hours to be discussed.
