Job Profile Summary This role focuses on assessing the needs of patients who have physical, mental, or emotional disabilities and delivering therapy services to improve their developmental, physical or cognitive impairment. In addition, it focuses on evaluating patients and using sound therapy to improve physical and mental conditions, and on treating a variety of speech disorders and communication difficulties. It is a professional individual contributor role that may direct lower‑level professionals or manage processes and programs. The majority of time is spent overseeing the design, implementation or delivery of programs and policies using specialized knowledge typically acquired through advanced education. It requires advanced knowledge of the job area and responsibilities such as managing projects or processes, working independently with limited supervision, coaching and reviewing the work of lower‑level professionals, and resolving difficult and complex problems. Job Overview This clinician is responsible for evaluating and diagnosing complex problems relating to speech, language, communication, and/or swallowing disorders. They formulate and recommend treatment plans which may include therapy, referrals for further consultations, extensive speech and language evaluations, or home training programs to achieve maximum functional independence. The position may be in both inpatient and outpatient settings and requires documentation of all age‑appropriate patient care in the medical record to comply with policies, procedures, and Joint Commission requirements. Supervision of other staff clinicians is also required. Minimum Qualifications Master’s degree in Speech‑Language Pathology. Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) from the American Speech and Hearing Association. Massachusetts state Speech Therapist License. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification. Three (3) years of experience as a Speech Therapist. Preferred Qualifications FEES experience. Acute care experience. MBS experience. NICU experience. Duties and Responsibilities Evaluate and/or screen patients referred to Speech and Language Pathology with a high degree of professional competency and efficiency, delivering competent care from infancy to adulthood. Evaluate and treat inpatients in the acute care setting on general floors and ICUs. Make recommendations including therapy, referrals, extended evaluations, or home training programs, monitored by the clinician. Prepare complete written reports of evaluations and progress of individual cases. Determine clinical indication and timeline for instrumental swallowing evaluations. Select appropriate tests, measures, and rehabilitation services, providing them consistently and efficiently. Educate and counsel patients, staff, and caregivers on diagnosis, etiology, and rehabilitation trajectory. Accurately assess, treat, and document thoroughly and promptly. Complete documentation, including evaluation reports, progress notes, periodic re‑assessments, and discharge summaries promptly, complying with insurance requirements. Participate in staff conferences to determine and reassess treatment goals and progress, and attend family conferences to keep families abreast of progress and problems. Participate in interdisciplinary and family conferences with other professionals to coordinate services. Educate staff on clinical skills, acting as a clinical liaison and instructor. Collaborate with Respiratory Therapy, Surgical Residents, and Pulmonary staff for care plan progression for patients with tracheostomy. Monitor workloads and assist the appointment secretary to schedule sufficient clinical activity to meet workload requirements. Keep abreast of current literature and acquire knowledge of new tests, instruments, machines, and devices. Maintain a working knowledge of the patient care program and devices available to patients. Initiate and/or participate in research projects, as required. Assist with holiday and weekend coverage PRN via on‑call schedule. Physical Requirements Frequent standing, walking, and transferring of patients. Manual dexterity using fine hand manipulation to operate a computer keyboard and for quantitative testing and manual treatment techniques. Ability to see the computer screen and reports. Visual assessment of injury and functional status, and audible assessment of patient subjective complaints. Skills & Abilities Broad foundation of knowledge and skills in diagnosis and treatment of patients with a wide variety of speech, language, cognitive, and communicative disorders. Interpersonal skills including communication, teamwork, ability to work one‑on‑one or in a group. Ability to work independently, self‑motivated, and well organized; capable of functioning well in busy situations. Responsible and reliable. Demonstrates flexibility and ability to adjust to changes at a moment’s notice. Maturity to operate effectively within a multidisciplinary setting. Able to work effectively with a wide variety of patients with acute and long‑term disability. Ability to read, write, and communicate in English. Demonstrated knowledge and skills to assess the needs of patients of all ages, providing appropriate care. Ability to observe and evaluate treatment effect and adjust the plan of care as appropriate.
