About the Position

Job Title: Registered Nurse - ICU Profession: RN (Registered Nurse) Specialty: ICU - Intensive Care Unit Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12-hour Nights Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum of 2 years critical care experience License: Valid RN License Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS Must-Have: Must have at least 1 year of critical care experience. Prior travel experience preferred. Must be competent with CRRT, IABP, vents, post-code/therapeutic hypothermia, and skilled with all vasoactive medications, sedation, and paralytics. Description: This role is in a unit with 18 beds, all private rooms, equipped for negative pressure capability for COVID patients. Nurse-to-patient ratios are typically 1:2. CRRT and organ donation cases may be assigned 1:1. The unit may stretch to 1:3 during overflow or stepdown situations. The average daily census is around 13 patients. Common diagnoses and types of patients treated include sepsis, pneumonia, COVID, CHF, COPD, DKA, overdose, renal failure, neurosurgeries involving lumbar drains and ventriculostomies, general surgery, occasional myocardial infarction, and vascular patients. ICU RNs are required to titrate drips within ordered parameters. They are also responsible for care and removal of central lines and other critical tasks. Charge Nurses are available during the day shift and may carry an assignment during high census periods. They take charge assignments on nights and weekends. The unit has 1-2 patient care technicians depending on the census and staffing needs. An intensivist is present from 7 AM to 7 PM daily with residents. Clientists provide overnight coverage from 6 PM to 6 AM. Respiratory therapy is available 24/7 in the ICU. Equipment such as vents, CPAP, BiPap, and high flow oxygen therapy is accessible through respiratory therapy. The ICU staff is responsible for monitoring and interpreting rhythms, with remote technicians as backup. Self-scheduling and block scheduling are allowed as long as unit needs are met, though block scheduling is not guaranteed. Weekend coverage is required every other weekend, which may include shifts on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. Holidays follow a rotation schedule. Floating to stepdown and med-surg as needed is a requirement. Scrub color is royal blue, with scrub jackets encouraged but not required. Jackets must be proper scrub jackets, as hoodies and sweat jackets are not permitted. Completion of general education competencies is required before beginning on the floor. A pharmacist is on the unit daily from 7 AM to 4:30 PM. Cancellation policy allows for the cancellation of up to 2 shifts during a 13-week assignment. The charting system utilized is EPIC. A BSN is not required for this position. All candidates should possess the required certifications. This is a trauma level acute care setting.
