Byers K9 Services is seeking dependable, professional, and motivated individuals for the position of K9 Security Patrol Handler . This position combines traditional security responsibilities with the deployment, handling, care, and continued training of a company-owned working K9.

K9 Security Patrol Handlers are responsible for maintaining a visible security presence, conducting proactive patrols, identifying and reporting suspicious or unsafe activity, protecting client property, and properly deploying their assigned K9 when appropriate.

This is a working K9 position , not simply a security position with a dog. Handlers are expected to maintain a high standard of professionalism, physical capability, situational awareness, report writing, K9 control, and accountability both on and off duty.

Primary Responsibilities

• Conduct routine and randomized foot patrols throughout assigned client properties.

• Maintain a highly visible security and K9 presence to deter theft, trespassing, vandalism, and other criminal activity.

• Inspect buildings, construction areas, gates, fencing, vehicles, equipment, and other designated areas.

• Identify suspicious persons, vehicles, activities, safety hazards, and security concerns.

• Professionally approach and address unauthorized individuals when appropriate.

• Enforce client site rules and established post orders.

• Contact law enforcement, fire, EMS, supervisors, or client representatives when circumstances require.

• Complete accurate and detailed daily activity reports, patrol documentation, incident reports, and other required records.

• Properly operate company-issued radios, body-worn cameras, mobile applications, and security equipment.

• Maintain situational awareness and immediately report unusual or significant activity.

• Remain awake, alert, attentive, and actively engaged for the entire assigned shift.

K9 Handler Responsibilities

Handlers may be partnered with a company-owned working K9 and are responsible for the professional handling and daily care of that K9 in accordance with BKS policies and training standards.

Responsibilities include:

• Safely handle and maintain control of the assigned K9 at all times.

• Deploy the K9 during security patrols as authorized by company policy and client requirements.

• Conduct required maintenance training and participate in scheduled company K9 training.

• Maintain proficiency in obedience, control, environmental exposure, patrol techniques, and other assigned disciplines.

• Properly maintain K9 equipment including collars, leashes, harnesses, crates, training equipment, and related gear.

• Maintain the K9's approved feeding, watering, exercise, grooming, and care schedule.

• Monitor the K9 for injury, illness, behavioral changes, or other concerns and immediately report them.

• Transport the K9 safely using an approved vehicle and secured K9 crate or containment system.

• Maintain an appropriate home environment for the K9 when authorized for home housing.

• Follow all company requirements concerning veterinary care, nutrition, medications, training tools, and K9 management.

All K9s assigned through this program remain the sole property of Byers K9 Services. Assignment of a K9 does not constitute ownership or create any ownership interest in the animal.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must:

• Be at least 18 years of age .

• Possess a valid driver's license.

• Have reliable transportation.

• Be legally authorized to work in the United States.

• Successfully complete all required background screening.

• Meet any state or local licensing requirements applicable to the assignment.

• Have the ability to stand and walk for extended periods.

• Be capable of working outdoors in varying weather conditions.

• Be physically capable of controlling a working German Shepherd, Belgian Malinois, Dutch Shepherd, or similar working breed.

• Be comfortable working independently with limited direct supervision.

• Possess strong communication and observational skills.

• Be capable of writing clear and accurate reports.

• Have a working smartphone and the ability to use company-required applications.

• Maintain professional appearance and conduct.

K9-Specific Requirements

Candidates selected for the K9 program must be willing and able to:

• Successfully complete the BKS-approved K9 Handler Academy and/or evaluation process before independent deployment.

• Demonstrate safe and competent handling of a working K9.

• Participate in continuing K9 training and proficiency evaluations.

• Maintain the K9 according to company standards while the K9 is assigned to them.

• Complete a home inspection before being approved to house a company K9.

• Have a living arrangement that safely accommodates a working K9.

• Maintain reliable transportation capable of safely transporting the K9 and required equipment.

• Follow BKS policies regarding K9 handling both on and off duty.

Previous K9 handling experience is preferred but is not necessarily required for candidates selected for company-sponsored training.

Preferred Experience

Preference may be given to applicants with previous experience in:

• Military or law enforcement

• Security operations

• Police or military working dogs

• Private-sector K9 handling

• Working-dog training

• Patrol or detection K9 operations

• Corrections

• Emergency services

• Construction-site security

• High-value asset protection

Work Environment

This position may include:

• Overnight shifts

• Weekends and holidays

• 8–12+ hour shifts

• Extended periods of walking and standing

• Exterior patrols

• Construction sites

• Commercial and residential developments

• Industrial properties

• Uneven terrain

• Exposure to heat, cold, rain, snow, and other weather conditions

Handlers must be comfortable working independently during overnight hours and responding appropriately to potentially unpredictable situations.

Professional Standards

K9 Security Patrol Handlers represent both BKS Security and Byers K9 Services while assigned to a client property. Employees are expected to demonstrate professionalism, sound judgment, integrity, reliability, and appropriate conduct at all times.

Sleeping while on duty, abandoning an assigned post, falsifying patrol or training records, mistreating a K9, unauthorized use of a company K9, or other serious violations of company policy may result in immediate disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Equipment

Depending on assignment, employees may be issued company equipment including:

• Uniform shirts and patches

• K9 collars, leashes, and harnesses

• Training equipment

• K9 crate

• Body-worn camera

• Safety equipment

• Other site- or K9-specific equipment

All issued equipment and K9 property remain the property of Byers K9 Services and must be properly maintained and returned when required.

Position Type

K9 Security Patrol Handler

Schedules and assignments vary according to client needs and may include nights, weekends, holidays, and extended shifts.
