Animal Control Officer

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES Enforce local state and federal laws and ordinances governing the harboring and treatment of animals. Capture and remove stray, abused, abandoned and injured animals from all environments within the city. Investigate reports of animal neglect and abuse, collecting and documenting evidence and writing detailed reports. Educate residents on responsible ownership and interact closely with other animal agencies, shelters, non-profit organizations dedicated to animal welfare. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Work under the supervision of the Patrol Support Division. The employee exercises some independent judgement in handling complaints. TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK Patrol City watching for stray, injured or deceased animals Investigate animal bites Recognize signs of animal illness, abuse, neglect and cruelty Make house calls, assist with police department runs to retrieve animals and transfer them to the police station, shelters or non-profit agencies approved by the department. Investigate complaints and, where necessary, issue summons for ordinance violations. Respond to dog complaints and attempt to secure the cooperation of dog owners in enforcing ordinances. Investigate kennels for proper licensing and care of animals. Maintain reports and records in accordance with MDARD and patrol department requirements Appear for scheduled court dates and testify using detailed reports written and evidence Perform related work as assigned DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of animal collection and care methods. Experience maintaining animals in a shelter environment. Ability to acquire knowledge of pertinent laws, ordinances and regulations. Ability to carry out oral directions and to prepare simple but accurate reports. Skill in checking and handling dogs without personal injury. High school diploma or G.E.D. Requirements High school graduate or G.E.D equivalent. o Diploma or official, sealed transcripts REQUIRED with application Registered A.C.O. through the Michigan Department of Agriculture or obtain A.C.O certification within 6 months of date of hire. o Registration REQUIRED with application if possible Possession of a license to operate a motor vehicle in the State of Michigan. Driving record must meet city's standards for insurability. Pay rate $58,038/year - $72,457/year (After 5 years) Excellent benefit package includes health, dental and life insurance, paid vacation and sick time. Deadline August 21, 2026 by 5:00 p.m.
