Categories: Veterinary & Animal Care Job Type: Non-Faculty Position Type: Full-Time Department: Veterinary Teaching Hospitals Associated Division: College of Veterinary Medicine Req ID: 8853 Overview The College of Veterinary Medicine ( seeks a Veterinary Technician (Floater) that will assist with patient care within the Medicine and Surgery sections in the Small Animal Hospital. The selected individual will also assist other services as needed based on patient demands and float in the Medicine/Surgery service area to assist with patient care and client needs. Schedule Mon – Fri, 8 am – 5 pm with some flexibility necessary. Responsibilities Organizes, cleans, stocks, and prepares treatment rooms for examination of animals, and holds or restrains animals during examination, treatment, or inoculation. Administers injections, anesthesia, serums, vaccines, and treatments to animals, including tasks such as dressing wounds, cleaning teeth, and taking vital signs of animals under the direction of a veterinarian. Performs laboratory tests to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of animal health problems. Cares for and monitors the condition of animals before, during, and/or after surgery; collects, prepares, and labels samples for laboratory testing and assists with research projects. Performs emergency first aid, such as emergency resuscitation or other life‑saving procedures. Assists with student instruction programs through preparation of materials, observing, monitoring, and/or grading tasks, and presenting orientation and procedures briefings. May triage phone calls from referring veterinarians/clients as well as schedule appointments for diagnostic procedures under the direction of a veterinarian. Qualifications Depending upon the combination of education and experience, the qualified candidate will be selected as Veterinary Technician and assigned Levels I, II, or III. LevelI: Requires an Associate’s Degree in Veterinary Technology or a related field that qualifies an individual to obtain national certification. LevelII: Requires an Associate’s Degree in Veterinary Technology plus 2 years of experience in Veterinary Technology or the professional care and comfort of animals. LevelIII: Requires an Associate’s Degree in Veterinary Technology plus 4 years of experience in Veterinary Technology or the professional care and comfort of animals. Experience must include at least 2 years at the preceding level or equivalent. Substitution Allowed for Experience When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience. License and Certifications Active license with the Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medicine as a Veterinary Technician, OR Have met all requirements to become licensed in the State of Alabama. Licensure must be obtained within 6 months of hire date.
