Special Education Aide/TRAILS

Job Description Help meet physical and instructional needs of individual students with disabilities inside and outside classroom. Assist with the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEP), including self‑help, behavior management, and instructional programs. Work under general supervision of the principal and immediate direction of a certified teacher. Primary responsibility is to assist in the TRAILS classroom. Duties and Responsibilities Help meet the individual needs of students, including transferring them to and from wheelchairs, lifting and positioning them, and signing or interpreting instructions for them, if needed. Help students take care of their physical and personal care including feeding, bathroom needs, and personal hygiene needs of the young adults in the TRAILS program. Help manage the behavior of assigned students. This includes intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or student behavior as needed. Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs. Work with assigned students or small groups to develop motor skills and conduct instructional exercises assigned by teacher. Assist assigned students throughout school day, inside and outside classroom. This includes all campus vocational sites, vocational labs, and/or work‑based learning locations. Assist as needed with campus school‑based enterprise. Assist with individual student data collection under the direction of the classroom teacher. Keep teacher informed of special needs or problems of assigned students. Assist with creating vocational skill task under the direction of the classroom teachers. Participate in professional development programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned. Maintain confidentiality. Perform other duties as assigned. Experience Experience working with children Qualifications Education/Certification: High school diploma or GED Valid Texas educational aide certificate (must obtain within 30 days of employment) Special Knowledge/Skills: Ability to work with children with disabilities Ability to follow verbal and written instructions Ability to communicate effectively Equipment Used Wheelchair lift, ramps, personal computer, copier, typewriter, and audiovisual equipment. Mental, Physical, and Environmental Demands Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); interpret policy, procedures, and data; maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling, regular heavy lifting of students; biological exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases.
