HVAC/R and Kitchen Equipment Technician

Reports To: Supervisor of Transportation and Maintenance

FLSA Designation: Non-Exempt

Job Goal: To repair and maintain district facilities to ensure efficient operation at all locations

Minimum Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Five years' experience in HVAC/R, commercial kitchen equipment repair, building maintenance, or a related skilled trade; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Must obtain a criminal history background clearance and meet the suitability criteria for employment under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.

Preferred Qualifications:

• HVAC/R certification, license, or technical training.
• EPA Section 608 certification.
• Experience with commercial or institutional HVAC/R systems and commercial kitchen equipment.
• Experience with building automation systems or HVAC controls.
• Experience working in a school, food service, commercial, or institutional environment.

Skills and Physical Abilities:

• Ability to safely operate and maintain required tools, equipment, and diagnostic instruments.
• Knowledge of commercial HVAC/R systems, electrical systems, plumbing, controls, and mechanical equipment.
• Ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair HVAC/R and kitchen equipment.
• Knowledge of commercial kitchen equipment, including ovens, ranges, fryers, steamers, dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers, ice machines, and related equipment.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, and equipment manuals.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and maintain accurate work records.
• Physical ability to perform the essential functions of the position, including lifting at least 75 pounds and pushing or pulling at least 100 pounds.

Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

1. Install, inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair commercial and institutional HVAC/R systems and equipment.
2. Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair commercial kitchen equipment, including cooking, refrigeration, food preparation, and warewashing equipment.
3. Diagnose and repair electrical, mechanical, refrigeration, plumbing, gas, and control-system problems associated with HVAC/R and kitchen equipment.
4. Perform scheduled preventive maintenance and respond to assigned work orders and emergency service calls.
5. Inspect equipment and facilities to identify needed repairs, safety concerns, and potential equipment failures.
6. Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and equipment serviced.
7. Maintain an inventory of tools, parts, equipment, and supplies.
8. Operate tools and diagnostic equipment in accordance with established safety procedures.
9. Follow all applicable safety procedures when working with electrical systems, refrigerants, gas equipment, chemicals, and mechanical equipment.
10. Maintain clean and safe work areas and ensure completed work meets established standards.
11. Assist with general building maintenance, including electrical, plumbing, and other facility needs, as assigned.
12. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor or supervisor's designee.
13. Receive and complete work orders.
14. Select material and hardware and make time and materials estimates.
15. Maintain inventory of board-owned tools, equipment, and materials.
16. Inspect jobs upon completion and ensure areas are clean.
17. Respond to emergency calls as needed.
18. Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
19. Ensure that equipment is in safe operating condition.
20. Follow safety precautions of the specific trades and practice standard safety procedures at all times.
21. Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.
22. Engages in personal professional growth, ongoing training, and demonstrates professional ethics and leadership.
23. Engages in required orientations, trainings, safety instruction, and meetings as required for effective job performance and/or advancement.
24. Maintains appropriate confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.
25. Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures.
26. Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local laws/regulations.
27. All other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor or supervisor's designee.

Terms of employment: 240-days

Daily work schedule will be determined by supervisor or his/her designee for the necessary operations of the school system. Work assignments and schedules are subject to change.

Salary: Approved salary schedule for Bus Shop and Maintenance Personnel is located on the Human Resources webpage. Salary for personnel is set at appropriate step and rank on adopted salary schedule based on skill level and experience. Annual salary is based on a 40-hour week.

Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the support personnel evaluation system and board policy.
