Senior Center Van Driver

Serve as Senior Center Van Driver; responsible for providing transportation needs to participants of the Senior Center. Friendly and personable individual needed to drive a small 14 passenger bus and escort fun loving senior citizens on various planned day trips around the metro area. Must enjoy going on outings such as theater, gardens, apple orchards, boat trips, etc. and not to be afraid to drive at night, in the metro area or on the freeways. Must be a take charge person since you will be responsible for the group while on a day trip. Occasionally you may be asked to fill in at the Senior Center and your duties would include but are not limited to opening the building in the morning, making coffee and helping serve lunch, taking seniors grocery shopping, picking up and dropping off seniors coming in for lunch, delivering lunches to home-bound seniors. Estimated hours 10-15/week (summer) 5-10/week (winter).

Major areas of accountability include providing transportation for Senior Program participants as needed, assisting program facilitators with various functions as needed, and providing chaperone/driving services on out-of-town functions.

Position expectations/requirements include a general understanding of social and recreational needs of Senior Citizens in and around the City of Anoka, ability to relate to and communicate effectively with Senior Citizens in verbal and written form, maintaining a positive, constructive and cooperative attitude with all patrons and fostering positive relationships, ability to work with minimum supervision, possessing excellent communication skills, ability to assist seniors on/off van as needed, creating a favorable image of the City in contacts with the Public, Elected Officials and other Organizations, exercising initiative, discretion and independent use of judgment over matters of low significance, keeping Public Services Administrator informed of any development, and performing other duties and assuming other responsibilities as apparent and/or as assigned by the Public Services Administrator.

Education/experience prerequisite(s) include a high school diploma or equivalent, a valid Driver's License and satisfactory driving record, ability to perform tasks necessary to assist individuals with restricted movement and/or limited physical ability to enter/exit out of a 14-passenger van or small bus, ability to effectively communicate with Senior Citizens verbally and in writing, ability to lift up to 50 lbs with or without special accommodations, experience working with Senior Citizens and Volunteers, experience driving large vehicles and using mirrors in reverse, experience performing pre-trip inspections of a vehicle or minor mechanical operations such as checking the oil in a motor vehicle, and enjoyment of going on outings, and events and interacting with participants of the Anoka Senior Center.
