This position will manage a team of examiners handling a variety of excess construction claims involving bodily injury, property damage and construction defect. This position will report to a Senior Director in the Casualty Claims group and be responsible for conveying the organization’s objectives and priorities to staff and measure progress towards stated goals.ResponsibilitiesMonitor and direct new loss assignments for excess construction claimsConfirm coverage of claims by reviewing policies and documents submitted in support of claimsReview and approve correspondence and reports including coverage position letters and Large Loss ReportsReview and approve reserves and settlements in excess of the authority of the handling examinerAssess and evaluate individual examiner and team performance, provide feedback, and address training needsMake recommendations concerning reserve changes to senior managementParticipate in review and discussion of large loss activity in the construction book with interested stakeholders (Underwriting, Actuarial, Executive Management)Ensure that team adheres to Fair Claims Practices regulations and internal performance objectivesPrepare and distribute reports by collecting and summarizing informationAssist in preparation of budgets, evaluation of expenses, and assessment of resource needsFoster and encourage strong relationships with internal stakeholders (Underwriting, Actuarial)Assist in identifying industry and coverage trendsPromote and enhance strong relationships with customers and channel partnersParticipate in special projects as requestedTravel to other claim offices, mediations, trials, and conferences as requiredEducationBachelor’s degree or equivalent work experienceJD, advanced degree, or focused technical degree preferredCertificationMust have or be eligible to receive claims adjuster licenseInsurance certifications or affiliation with industry group preferredWork ExperienceMinimum of 10 years of claims handling experience or equivalent combination of education and experienceExperience in managing claims examiners at the Senior Claims Examiner and/or Executive Claims Examiner levelSkill SetsExcellent written and oral communication skillsStrong analytical and problem solving skillsStrong organization and time management skillsAbility to deliver outstanding customer serviceIntermediate skills in Microsoft Office products (Excel, Outlook, Power Point, Word)Ability to work in a team environmentStrong desire for continuous improvementMarkel offers hybrid working schedules of 3 days in the office and 2 days remote.   #LI-Hybrid#LI-SYUS Work AuthorizationUS Work Authorization required. Markel does not provide visa sponsorship for this position, now or in the future.Pay information:The base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job-relevant education, job-relevant experience, training, licensure, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors. The salary for the position is $118,960 - $163,570 with a 30% bonus potential.
