Ophthalmic Technician – Refractive/LASIK Coordinator - PER DIEM

WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR

We’re looking for an experienced, patient-focused Ophthalmic Technician to join our Refractive/LASIK team at our Ambulatory Surgical Center.

This is a multi-functional clinical role designed for someone who enjoys variety and wants to expand their ophthalmic skill set. You’ll support patients throughout their refractive surgery journey while being cross-trained across several functions within the LASIK suite.

You’ll perform ophthalmic workups and refractions, provide pre- and post-operative patient education, and receive training to support LASIK procedures, including laser operation and treatment programming.

Because our LASIK team works collaboratively, you will not be expected to perform all of these responsibilities independently during a LASIK session. Cross-training is intended to provide flexibility and ensure strong clinical coverage across the team.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Ophthalmic & Refractive Care

• Perform patient workups and obtain accurate patient histories
• Perform accurate manifest refractions
• Conduct routine and ancillary ophthalmic testing
• Document patient information, testing and clinical findings accurately in the EMR
• Support physicians throughout the patient evaluation and treatment process
• Assist with refractive surgery consultations and clinical evaluations

LASIK Suite Support

• Cross-train to support procedures within the LASIK suite
• Learn to operate and assist with refractive laser technology in accordance with established protocols
• Learn to accurately enter and program treatment information into required refractive surgery software
• Prepare patients and the procedure area for LASIK treatments
• Assist the surgeon and clinical team during refractive procedures
• Follow established safety, quality and clinical protocols

Patient Education & Coordination

• Guide patients through the refractive surgery process from consultation through post-operative care
• Provide pre-operative and post-operative education and instructions
• Educate patients regarding procedure preparation, medications and post-operative expectations
• Answer patient questions and help address concerns throughout their surgical experience
• Coordinate with physicians and clinical team members to ensure continuity of care
• Provide a high level of personalized, patient-centered service

SCHEDULE & AVAILABILITY

Flexibility is important for this position because the LASIK schedule is based on surgeon procedure volume.

Candidates should have availability to support LASIK procedures on:

Monday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons

LASIK procedures may not be scheduled every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. The specific schedule will vary based on surgeon bookings and patient volume.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO SUCCEED

• Previous ophthalmic technician experience strongly preferred
• Experience performing manifest refractions strongly preferred
• Refractive/LASIK experience is a plus, but we are willing to train the right ophthalmic technician
• Strong clinical and patient-care skills
• Excellent verbal and written communication
• Comfort learning new ophthalmic technology, equipment and software
• Strong attention to detail, particularly when working with clinical and treatment information
• Ability to provide compassionate, high-touch patient education and support
• Ability to remain calm and organized in a procedural environment
• Collaborative and flexible approach to working within a cross-trained clinical team
• Ability to adapt to changes in procedure schedules and patient volume
• Knowledge of ocular pharmacology, including anesthetics, steroids, antibiotics, mydriatics, cycloplegics, miotics and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, is a plus.
