Registered Nurse

The Registered Nurse (RN) plans and provides comprehensive nursing care. This includes executing Licensed Independent Provider's orders and administering medications. Assists the Licensed Independent Provider in examinations and treatment of patients. Applies nursing and supervisory techniques required in the care and treatment of residents. Performs all technical and clinical procedures within the scope of education and licensure. Attends sick calls with the physician to see residents and prepares a list of those to be examined. Prepares the examining room and equipment for patient care. Operates pill call, dispenses medications, and documents as required by applicable policies. Calls the Licensed Independent Providers for medication and treatment orders, and emergencies. Examines and assesses new residents with illnesses or injuries. Refers residents to the emergency room or other healthcare facilities as required by their condition. Performs emergency procedures as needed and notifies the Licensed Independent Provider for treatment orders. Assists in coordinating professional medical services provided by contract personnel. Maintains a good working relationship with facility staff, nursing staff, and providers. Utilizes established policies and procedures in decision-making while exercising independent judgment. Regularly evaluates the provision of medical services to prevent inappropriate use or duplication. Maintains absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records. Assists with the review of medical files to ensure all services are documented. Monitors all potential catastrophic illnesses closely. Audits pharmacy use for adherence to formulary as directed. Complies with all applicable pharmacy laws, especially regarding controlled substances. Observes and records resident behavior. Inspects the medical unit for items that could be misconstrued as contraband. Provides health counseling and health education on an individual or group basis as required. Prepares and maintains various standard reports, logs, and documents timely and accurately. Reads, analyzes, comprehends, and interprets medical and technical procedures and legal documents. Facilitates accreditation of the medical program by providing efficient and appropriate medical services. Prepares and disseminates safety and accident reports as required by policies. Takes appropriate action in cases of serious incidents and emergencies.
