Phlebotomist – Blood Bank/LaboratoryBaystate Health CareersDepartment: LaboratoryLocation: Baystate Medical Center, Springfield, MAJob Type: 24 hoursShift: Day shiftPossesses and utilizes technical skills, training, and knowledge of principles, techniques and equipment to collect whole blood donations via venipuncture from blood donors. Participates in blood drives conducted on the bloodmobile and in both fixed site locations at BMC and Noble Hospital. Performs donor registration, donor medical interviews, and mini physical exams and determines eligibility of a person to donate blood. Performs apheresis donor collections and is involved with special projects and committees involving others external to the program. Participates in the recruitment of blood donors and sustaining Blood Donor Program client relationships.Job Responsibilities:1) Safety. Possesses skills/knowledge to: appropriately dispose of bio-hazardous waste; evaluate and handle difficult donor situations (qualification issues, dissatisfied with service, fainting, seizures, excessive bleeding, other donor complications, etc.); various barrier precaution procedures; appropriate use of equipment; and tasks related to safety record keeping and QI. Coordination of CPR Training for BDP staff.2) Technical. Performs donor identification, qualification and labeling with accuracy. Advanced level assessing vein size, location and position of veins for vascular access and performance of venipuncture. Advanced level blood collection by veins and capillary puncture for Hgb testing, processing and handling. Proficient in specialized delivery of age appropriate care. Proficient at calculation of minimum collection requirements for difficult draws. Advanced level assessment of site selection and second attempts where required. Performs equipment maintenance. Advanced level blood component/handling and transporting in a manner appropriate to maintain product integrity by utilizing the courier or transporting to BMC after Bloodmobile drives. Performs apheresis collections and operates equipment at an advanced level of understanding theory, collection efficiency, troubleshooting and donor care. Independent problem solving and troubleshooting.3) Work Relationships. Demonstrates excellent communication, teamwork and customer service to work independently and/or in team environment. Builds and sustains client relationships with blood drive locations internal and external to Baystate. Interacts with supervisor, Lead MLS and TMS physicians in making donor qualification decisions. Participates in or liaison to special projects and committees involving others external to the program.4) IT. Advanced level of troubleshooting all procedures and systems. i.e. Donor Program IT, GoToMyPC and connectivity issues.5) Clerical. Secures donor consent signatures and completes forms required to meet regulatory compliance. Performs tasks related to record keeping and Blood Donor Records. Performs clerical duties to include copying, faxing, filing. Assists in the recruitment of blood donors to include telephone call reminders, on-site recruiting of donors and coordinator coaching. Performs supply inventory and assists with departmental ordering.6) Leadership. Training/mentoring of new employee/students. Ability to take charge responsibilities. Coordinates response to problems encountered in the facilitation of blood drives.7) Supervisory. Assists supervisor with oversight and monitoring day to day activities. Liaison to Recruitment staff. Mentors staff. Performs assigned departmental QI audits.8) Additional Responsibilities. Donor registration and medical interviewing, performance of vital signs, POC hemoglobin, builds and sustains relationship with coordinator at donor site. Works in multiple locations (i.e.. Blood Donor Center, Noble, Bloodmobile). Participates in the recruitment of blood donors and sustaining Blood Donor Program client relationships. Takes "charge" of Blood Drives and assists supervisor with feedback & documentation of staff performance.Required Work Experience:1) 2 years phlebotomy experience of which 12 months must be BRL/BH experienceSkills and Competencies:1) Advanced level phlebotomy, specimen handling acquired through experienceEducation:GED or HiSET (Required)Certifications:Certified Phlebotomy Technician – OtherOtherOther, Driver License – OtherOtherOtherCompensationNote: The compensation range(s) in the table below represent the base salaries for all positions at a given grade across the health system. Typically, a new hire can expect a starting salary somewhere in the lower part of the range. Actual salaries may vary by position and will be determined based on the candidate's relevant experience.
