Associate, Global Forests and Energy

$60k - $65k

Feminist Majority Foundation

Mighty Earth is seeking an associate to support our campaigns to protect forests and fight the climate crisis around the world, with a focus on Asia and West Africa. As our Associate, you will work closely with our team to preserve highly biodiverse and climate critical forests and the communities that rely on them. We work to protect forests and address climate change in these regions by targeting governments and industries to adopt policies that impact global supply chains. Our campaigns are currently focused in Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan, and Ghana. You will mainly work with our team, consultants, and grantees across the region and in affected communities around the world. Who we are: Founded in 2016, Mighty Earth is a global advocacy organization with a goal of protecting half of Earth for Nature and securing a climate that allows life to flourish. Mighty Earth has played a leading role in driving a more than 90% decline in deforestation for palm oil and similarly dramatic declines for pulp, paper and rubber in Southeast Asia, the adoption of improved government forest and wildlife protections, and improved traceability for transition minerals and other commodities in Asia and Africa. We achieve results by creating a “perfect storm” of campaigns, communications, and practical engagement with decision-makers. Through our campaigns, we seek to make significant progress to support impacted people around the world, including by protecting Indigenous land rights. Your responsibilities will include: Supporting our campaign team, including meeting coordination, preparation, and notetaking; contributing to campaign team planning, strategy discussions and tactical plans. Contributing to Mighty Earth investigations, including research and analysis of corporate structures and supply chains as well as social responsibility policies. Assisting with the outreach to and ongoing relationship-building with civil society partners, academics, and government officials, including organizing and participating in meetings and information sharing. Supporting outreach to company executives and government policymakers. Working with Mighty Earth’s communications team to create and post up-to-date digital content relating to our campaigns and to track media hits. Creating, editing, and posting internal and external campaign materials, including blog posts, briefings, reports, and internal updates. Organizing internal and external online and in-person meetings, events, and webinars. Supporting all needs related to grant funding and reporting, including tracking grant activity, budget planning, and coordinating procurement and contracting across the team. Additional administrative support as needed, including managing the team’s organizational files and workflow systems on SharePoint, One Drive and Slack. What we’re looking for in you: You have at least two years of professional work experience working in campaign, advocacy, or grassroots organizing environments, with some experience working on environment, social justice, human rights, Indigenous Peoples’ rights, or related issues. You have strong verbal and written communications skills. You are comfortable working as part of a small dynamic campaign-oriented team based in different parts of the world. You are highly organized and detail-oriented, with an ability to juggle multiple responsibilities across different projects. You are proactive and self-directed, with good problem-solving abilities. You are self-sufficient with time-management skills, and have a proven ability to meet deadlines. You have a passion for working for a better and more just world. You have experience with and a commitment to working with people from a variety of backgrounds, including different ethnic, racial and socio-economic backgrounds and the LGBTQIA+ community. You can get up to speed quickly on new programs and technology as needed. We use Microsoft Office 365, Canva, Airtable, Expensify, and Harvest among others. Preferred but not required experience and skills: Experience working in Asia or Africa and/or expertise in Asian or African environmental, political, or economic issues. Knowledge of Bahasa Indonesia, Japanese, Chinese, or French is a plus, but not required. English fluency is required. Familiarity with graphic design or website building. You have some experience with building and maintaining coalitions. Familiarity working with team members in an international setting from a range of ethnicities and backgrounds. Location: We have a preference for candidates based in Washington, D.C. We will also consider candidates based in the other parts of the US, EST preference. For exceptional candidates, we will also consider other parts of the Americas or Western Europe. For candidates based in the D.C. area, working in the office twice a week is expected. Other details: This is a full-time position. You will report to our Senior Associate of Forests and Climate. Salary: We use location-based pay bands to ensure our compensation remains both competitive and equitable. In the U.S., the salary band for this role is $60,000-$65,000, with a generous benefits package. If you are located outside the U.S., your salary will be adjusted based on the cost of labor in your specific region. For example, for candidates in the UK, the salary range for this role is £48,000-53,000 with a generous benefits package, and in Amsterdam, the range is €52,000–€56,000 with a generous benefits package. If you are from another country in the Americas or Western Europe, please inquire during the recruiting process and we can provide a range. This position requires an initial one-year commitment, with the possibility to extend, depending on funding. Culture: Mighty Earth is results-focused, entrepreneurial, collaborative, and nimble – and we seek candidates who are excited to work in our “obsessed with impact” culture. While remaining true to our public interest mission and commitment to movement-building, we’ve sought to apply the best of business to our organization.
