About ApertureAperture brings together leading forensic specialists and technical consultants who clarify complex events, strengthen business decisions, and deliver answers grounded in science and extensive industry experience.Salary: $140,000 - $180,000Position SummaryThe ideal candidate is a licensed, experienced MEP Professional Engineer with experience in design and construction, preferably with expertise in forensic investigations. Aperture Built Environment Group is primarily a forensic organization that also performs design (mostly remedial) and building systems assessments. This role requires leadership in managing multidisciplinary teams, performing forensic analysis, designing remedial solutions, and delivering high-quality technical reports. The candidate will also manage client relationships, support business development efforts, and effectively oversee multiple projects, scopes, and budgets. Experience in expert testimony at arbitration, deposition, and/or trial is a plus.Core Qualifications & ExpertiseBachelor’s degree in Mechanical (or electrical) Engineering required (Master’s degree preferred)Minimum of 10+ years of relevant experience in mechanical, electrical, or controls-focused environmentsActive Professional Engineer (PE) license required, with the ability to obtain additional state licenses as needed (NCEES Record preferred). Obtaining an NCEES Record within six months of employment will be a requirement for continued employment.Strong technical expertise in HVAC, plumbing, and electrical building systems, industrial equipment, and building automation systemsWorking knowledge of electrical systems, control circuits, and controller I/O configurations.Strong knowledge of building, plumbing, mechanical, fire protection, and electrical codes and related standards with respect to MEP, including related standards and guidelines.Technical ResponsibilitiesRead and interpret all specifications and building design drawings as they relate to electrical, control, and mechanical systems, plumbing systems, electrical systems, including HVAC systems, and building operationsServe as MEP Engineer of Record on projects. Prepare construction documents.Lead and perform forensic analysis of MEP systems.Conduct field investigations, including site visits to buildings, construction sites, and post-disaster environments.Identify root causes of structural and building failures and develop technically sound conclusions.Prepare MEP calculations.Prepare clear, concise reports for technical and non-technical audiences.Provide expert testimony in depositions, mediations, and trials.Design MEP systems and remedial repair solutions for a range of situations.Prepare drawings, review submittals, and determine compliance with applicable codes and standards.Read forensic reports to determine allegations of bad design, bad construction, or damage to building systems, and to determine adequate investigations and produce response reports.Perform detailed reviews and quality control of:Control panel Bills of Materials (BOMs)Sequences of Operations (SOOs)Control panel and power distribution drawings (including layouts, schematics, interconnection, and wiring diagrams)Logic diagrams for PLCs and DCS systems in accordance with international automation standardsCable schedules, routing plans, and associated documentationComplete knowledge of inspections, testing, and commissioning activities.Knowledge of construction means and methods.Knowledge of the interaction of drawings, specifications, and construction contracts.Utilize MEP analysis and design software effectively.Use Bluebeam and Microsoft Office Suite for documentation, collaboration, and reporting.Advanced technical writing and reporting skills.10 years of experience practicing within the continental United States is required.Leadership & Project ManagementProvide mentorship and technical guidance to engineers and project teamsManage project scope to align with site-specific constraints, client expectations, and technical requirementsBalance multiple priorities while maintaining a strong focus on quality, timelines, and resultsManage multiple projects concurrently, including scope, schedule, and budget oversight.Lead cross-functional teams in investigations and design efforts.Ensure adherence to the MEP standard of care.Client Management & Business DevelopmentBuild and maintain strong client relationships.Support marketing, proposal development, and business growth initiatives.Communicate technical concepts effectively to clients, attorneys, insurers, building owners, and other stakeholdersCommunication & CollaborationDemonstrate advanced written and verbal communication skills, including clear technical documentation and effective stakeholder engagementActively listen and solicit input from clients, peers, and cross-functional teams to drive informed decision-makingBuild strong working relationships while maintaining the ability to operate independently with minimal supervisionIndustry ExperienceExperience working in high-demand, mission-critical, or regulated environments such as data centers, healthcare facilities, oil & gas, or manufacturing operationsWork Style & Additional RequirementsHighly organized with strong problem-solving abilities and a results-driven mindsetSelf-motivated with the ability to work independently and lead initiatives with minimal oversightWillingness to travel overnight, by air, as required.Physical RequirementsAbility to sit in an office environment for extended periods (up to 80%).Ability to stand, walk, and perform fieldwork (up to 20%).Ability to climb ladders.Ability to work in confined or constrained environments when required for investigations.BenefitsWe strive to offer an environment that provides our employees with the right balance between work and family.
