They work closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nurses to ensure a sterile and well-organized environment throughout surgical procedures.

Key Responsibilities:
Prepare and maintain the cardiovascular operating room, ensuring all necessary instruments, supplies, and equipment are sterile and ready.

Assist the surgical team during procedures by passing instruments and supplies in a timely and efficient manner.

Maintain a sterile field and adhere to strict infection control protocols.

Set up and operate specialized equipment such as heart-lung machines, suction devices, and electrosurgical units (in some settings).

Monitor and count instruments, sponges, and needles before, during, and after surgery to ensure nothing is retained.

Assist with patient positioning, draping, and prepping for surgery.

Handle specimens properly and prepare them for laboratory analysis.

Participate in post-operative room cleanup and restocking of supplies.

Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in surgical technology and cardiovascular procedures.

Required Skills and Qualifications:
Completion of an accredited surgical technology program (Certificate, Diploma, or Associate's Degree).

Certification as a Surgical Technologist (preferred or required in many states), such as:

Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through the NBSTSA

Tech in Surgery - Certified (TS-C) through NCCT

Previous experience in cardiovascular or operating room settings strongly preferred.

Excellent knowledge of surgical instruments, cardiovascular procedures, and sterile techniques.

Strong attention to detail, communication, and teamwork skills.

Licensure and Certification Requirements by State (U.S.):
Licensure and certification requirements for Surgical Technologists vary by state. Here's a summary of key regulations:

States that Require Certification or Registration:
Mandatory Certification or Licensure:

Idaho

Indiana

Massachusetts

Nevada

New Jersey

New York

Oregon

South Carolina

Tennessee

Texas

Virginia

In these states, you typically must graduate from an accredited surgical technology program and obtain a CST credential. Some states allow alternate certifications like the TS-C, or may have specific state-recognized credentialing requirements.

States with Registration (Not Full Certification) Requirements:
Colorado

Washington

These states may require surgical technologists to register with the state but may not mandate national certification.

States with No State-Level Requirement (Employer-Driven):
In all other states, certification is not mandated by state law, but many employers require or strongly prefer certified surgical technologists (CST or TS-C), especially for specialized roles like CVOR.

Preferred Certifications for CVOR Techs:
Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) (sometimes required)

Additional training or credentialing in cardiovascular or thoracic surgery procedures is highly desirable.
