Teacher Assistant - Behavior Intervention Specialist @ Hunter Huss High Career Academy Gastonia, NC, United States Job Description Definition The employee performs a variety of tasks for the professional staff in the schools, which supports the educational environment in the classroom. Among the specialty areas are instruction, clerical, behavior, bus driving, computer, and/or control room. Work requires the performance and demonstration of a variety of competencies. Each area is an essential function. Instructional Assists in the preparation of materials Takes initiative with instructional duties Assists the teacher with instruction, whether whole class, small group, and/or individual Keeps students on task May fill in for the teacher, as needed Behavior Lab/Control Room Uses appropriate behavioral interventions Participates in professional learning related to these duties Treats students with respect Successfully assists students with assignments Behavior Intervention Specialist Compile and analyze data on individual and county‑wide school discipline issues Maintain files and provide reports to local administrators related to school discipline issues Assist in the development of behavior plans Work with teachers and school administrators to identify ‘at‑risk’ students Attend Crisis Intervention Monthly Care Meetings Attend Child Family Treatment meetings Attend weekly MTSS meetings Assist Counselor with Section 504’s Conduct small group/one‑on‑one therapeutic meetings Conduct classroom observations for identified students Assist in creating safety plans Conduct therapeutic walks and talks with students as needed Assist in communicating the mental health therapeutic treatment of students to parents Assist students, parents, and schools with the transition‑out process Other duties as assigned (Sub) Bus Driver Adheres to all components of the Bus Driver Agreement Follows all parts of the Bus Driver Handbook Eagerly accepts special driving assignments Completes all bus reports accurately as assigned Successfully instructs students on the basics of computer skills Successfully guides students through computerized programs that enhance the school’s curriculum Successfully trains teachers in all aspects of Microsoft Office and computerized programs Reviews software and advises administrators on quality and alignment to Common Core and Essential Standards Understands and troubleshoots system operations, networking, and system‑wide programs Maintains files of general records, data files, documents, correspondence, forms, index cards, reports, and other materials; posts information to departmental records according to standard procedures Answers incoming telephone calls and routes them to the proper person or department; answers questions regarding routine matters; performs routine clerical and typing duties Performs arithmetic calculations manually or by use of a calculator according to established methods Transcribes information onto forms, processes letters, memoranda, reports, tabulations, statements, various card records, and other materials from rough draft or detailed instructions, if needed Resolves problems of medium difficulty with little assistance Occasionally develops or revises procedures for non‑complex work Completes forms, permits, notices, or form letters with designated or routine information, if needed Operates copying machines, adding machines, personal computers, and other office equipment Receives standardized reports and compiles data into summary or consolidated forms Performs a variety of minor administrative tasks in relieving a supervisor of office details Might be required to assist the public at a counter, giving information and answering questions regarding school programs Performs duties with limited supervision School preparation and determination of who takes specific tests and works with scheduling of all testing modifications (work with SSMT, EC, and applicable personnel) Attends pre‑testing meetings held by the Director of Testing and staff (mandatory participation) Fulfills requirements provided by the Director of Testing. Makes necessary preparations for each testing event – secure test administrators, test proctors; count out books/pencils/other materials; conduct training; secure approval of principal or designee regarding all plans for the testing event; secure classroom space and appropriate atmosphere for each testing event Coordinates events on testing days using guidelines provided by the Director of Testing Completes follow‑up activities after tests are given – secures test materials and assures safety and security of testing materials; returns materials; keeps records as specified by the Director of Testing Assists school counselors with student registration and input of schedules Assists school counselors with requesting records (transfers into the school). Assists school counselors with record requests of students who have transferred out of the school Adheres to procedures for safe and proper record keeping, maintaining the security of student records at all times Assists with duties in the front office of the school as assigned by the Principal (these duties should not interfere with the primary duty of the Test Coordinator) Other duties as assigned Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities General knowledge of the operations of the school General knowledge and ability to use correct grammar, spelling, and vocabulary Knowledge of office practices and procedures General knowledge of elementary arithmetic General knowledge of common word processing, spreadsheet, and file maintenance programs General knowledge of the principles of organization and administration Ability to transcribe information and to prepare standardized forms, letters, and reports from that information Ability to operate common office machines Ability to process documents such as purchase orders, invoices, etc. Ability to sort and distribute documents Ability to maintain complete and accurate records and to develop standard reports from those records Ability to file records and reports in proper sequential order Ability to maintain confidentiality Ability to respond to questions based on considerable knowledge of the department Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions Ability to type accurately at a moderate rate of speed Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, students, parents, coworkers, and the general public Ability to adhere to all policies, procedures, and ethical practices of the North Carolina Testing and Accountability program Student Success Coordinator (High School) Definition An employee in this position is a Teacher Assistant who is proficient in data analysis, Student Services Management Team (SSMT), and computer software such as Home Base, Plato, North Carolina Virtual Public High School (NCVPHS), Microsoft Excel, and Access. The Student Success Coordinator (SSC) must be able to work flexible hours, including Saturday from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. This employee must be able to work daily from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm or 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. The purpose of this position is Student Management, including student attendance, tardiness, and other duties assigned by the Administration. Bilingual ESL Instructional Assistant, Middle School (Learning Lab) and ML (Multi‑Language) for Elementary The job of Bilingual ESL Coordinator was established for the purpose/s of assisting in the instruction of limited/non‑English speaking students, performing classroom and non‑classroom translation tasks, and serving as a resource to other school personnel requiring assistance with non‑English speaking persons. This person will also work with individual and/or small groups of students under the supervision of a certified teacher, instructing students and assisting students by modeling the necessary skills to perform assignments. This person must be fluent and able to translate and interpret. Common Competencies and Physical Requirements Administers chapter or classroom tests, homework, make‑up work, etc. for collaborating with the teacher of record to devise special strategies for reinforcing materials or skills based on the understanding of individual students, their needs, interests and abilities Consults with teacher/s, counselor and/or administrator as may be required (e.g. selecting materials to be used, implementing lesson plans, any concerns related to student, special information, special learning needs, cultural appreciation, etc.) for the purpose of receiving and/or conveying information regarding students activities and progress Implements instructional programs and lesson plans for assisting the ESL and classroom teacher in improving students’ academic success through a defined course of study Instructs students individually or in groups with online and in‑class lesson assignments (e.g. planning daily activities/lessons, modifying lessons, listening to students read, tutoring, etc.) for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts Maintains various records (e.g. forms, pupil profile cards, lesson plans, attendance records, etc.) for providing up‑to‑date reference and in compliance with ESL program requirements, which supports the teacher of record Monitors individual and/or groups of students in various activities (e.g. classroom, library, field trips, lunchroom, assemblies, etc.) for providing a safe and positive learning environment Performs record keeping and clerical functions (e.g. maintaining student records, scheduling, copying, translating lesson materials, etc.) for supporting the ESL teacher and/or administrator in providing necessary records/materials Translates verbal communication for assisting students, teachers, and parents in communicating effectively Duties and Responsibilities Multi‑Tiered System of Support (MTSS) Attend and lead MTSS meetings Keep accurate logs and transcripts of all meetings Follow up with all actions from the MTSS meetings Report on items from previous MTSS meetings at forthcoming meetings Work closely with the Guidance Counselor, School Nurse, and Social Worker in relation to student issues Send out meeting notices to all personnel required to attend MTSS meetings on a weekly basis Act as the contact person for all issues needing MTSS attention, such as MTSS referral forms given to this employee prior to each meeting Track period attendance and tardiness on a daily basis Brief the Principal, Assistant Principal, and MTSS on a weekly basis on students who are not attending school on a regular basis Manage the attendance recovery policy Manage the attendance make‑up process and contact parents about the tardy and attendance issues via Connect‑Ed on a daily basis North Carolina Virtual Public High School (NCVPHS) Register and enroll students for Learn and Earn and NCVPHS courses Track the student’s grades and login time Work with teachers to update them on each student and the progress in the course Communicate with the virtual teacher and the Learn and Earn instructor Credit Recovery During the School Day Work with counselors to determine which students could benefit from attending credit recovery Manage the students using PLATO and Study Island Submit grade changes to the Data Manager Develop a list of students needing grade recovery and work with teachers to ensure all qualified students attend credit recovery Contact the parent of each student attending credit recovery Collect the contracts from the students Attend data guru meetings and work with all data files Develop and present data during faculty meetings Present reports and analysis of all school data to the Principal and Assistant Principal as required Academic Student Tracking Extract reports from Home Base for students failing every six weeks and semester Work with the Guidance Counselor and teachers of students failing during the interim and six‑week grading period Produce and print interim reports, six‑week reports, and end‑of‑semester failure reports Brief the principal and the Assistant Principal on all reports Execute the School‑Wide Discipline Plan, which requires students to attend After School Detention (ASD) when they are disciplined for minor violations Contact parents when students are assigned ASD and Saturday School Train the staff on PLATO, Study Island, and any new web‑based programs. Will be responsible for using PLATO and Study Island for grade recovery Contact parents and students Provide a letter to students who have to attend Saturday School Other related work as required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities for Student Success Coordinator Knowledgeable and skilled in the use of Microsoft Excel to write formulas and use the majority of the functions to analyze data Knowledgeable and skilled in the use of Microsoft Access to manage and organize large amounts of data Knowledgeable and skilled in the use of Home Base to produce reports for attendance, tardiness, and grades Ability to use Connect‑Ed to contact parents when students have a large number of tardies or have a history of not attending school on a regular basis Ability to organize materials Ability to follow written and oral instructions Ability to develop and maintain an effective working relationship with students, parents, teachers, and administrators Ability to work independently to accomplish assigned tasks Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or composite characteristics of data, people or things Ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving instructions, assignments, and/or directions from supervisors Ability to prepare a variety of correspondence, reports, handbooks, forms, lists, etc. Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and deal with several abstract and concrete variables Ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions.
