Job Description SUPERVISOR: Director, Curriculum and Instruction TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 11 months FLSA: Exempt General Description The English Learner (EL) teacher monitors and supports the entire well‑being of the EL student, as well as provides support to parents/guardians of EL students as they engage in the school community. The position is responsible for providing English language development instruction to grades K‑12 students who do not have proficiency in the four domains: listening, speaking, reading, and/or writing. The EL teacher plans and implements a learning plan that develops competencies, knowledge, and skills for each student in the English Language Development Program. Minimum Qualifications Must possess a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in English as a Second Language and/or meet the Virginia Department of Education licensure eligibility requirements. Must be eligible or possess a Virginia Collegiate Professional License or Postgraduate Professional License with appropriate endorsement to teach English as a Second Language. Must possess the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing and establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public. Essential Duties Utilize the WIDA ELD standards and framework to develop curriculum and other appropriate learning activities for all students based on their English language proficiency levels. Develop lesson plans, supplementary materials, and appropriate learning activities that are compatible with core courses when possible. Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment. Provide individual, small group, or whole group instruction to meet the required number of service minutes required by the school division. Support the mainstream teacher in lesson planning and modifications for EL students. Monitor and evaluate the academic and social growth of all EL students, review interim and report card grades and attendance, and collaborate frequently with teachers, school building administration, and school counselors on students’ academic, behavioral, or social concerns. Monitor previous English Learners’ academic performance. Communicate regularly with parents about student progress and serve as liaison between the school and parents/guardians of EL students. Participate in faculty meetings. Coordinate school special events that support EL students and families. Attend school events during the school day and in the evening to help support EL students and families (e.g., Reading Night, Math Night). Administer screening and access for ELLs testing in accordance with state and division testing requirements. Monitor division‑wide activities and programs and encourage EL students to take advantage of all school opportunities. Provide professional development to staff on best practices and the WIDA ELD standards and framework. Support registration and admission of new EL students. Translate school documents as necessary. Create a daily/weekly schedule to provide service minutes for all students. Write student support plans and coordinate the meeting schedule. Skillsets and Characteristics of a Successful Candidate Able to prioritize and complete multiple, simultaneous tasks in a fast‑paced environment. Able to work with students in grades K‑12 and engage in age‑appropriate instructional practices. Vigilant in monitoring student needs. Competent in written and verbal communication. Fluency in Spanish is preferred but not required. Model non‑discriminatory practices in all activities. Positive attitude and proactive problem solving. Other Duties If fluent in Spanish, the EL teacher may be called upon to interpret at meetings such as parent/teacher conferences, and gifted or special education meetings for EL students. Maintain professional competence by attending staff development programs, curriculum development meetings, state‑sponsored conferences, and other professional activities. Perform any other related duties as assigned by the Director of Curriculum and Instruction or other appropriate administrator that align with the mission and vision of King William County Public Schools.
