General Information

Beds: 44 individual rooms, 10 hallway beds, approx. 5 cardiac chairs

Will you accept a traveler with 1 year experience? No, 2 years of recent ED experience

Will you accept a first-time traveler? Yes, with 2 years of ED experience

Patient Types:

Average patient load: 150 patients per 24 hours

All ED patient types from neonates to geriatrics

No inpatient pediatric units will transfer pediatrics to Advocate Lutheran or Advocate Children's

Stroke (TPA administration), DKA, Trauma (GSW, MVC, elderly falls), geriatric psych, abdominal pain, COVID, STEMI

Heavy behavioral health population

ICU Holds department has capabilities of EICU RN

Patient Ratios:

RN: 1:4-6; usually 1:4-5 during days and will flex to 6 at night

When fully staffed, ratio is 1:3

Required Certifications:

BLS, ACLS, PALS, NIHSS, TNCC; CPI/MOAB, TCRN, TNS, ENPC preferred

Skills required

IV starts, assisting with chest tube insertion, medication titration (pressors, insulin, sedation), trauma experience, stroke experience with TPA administration; US guided IV preferred

All agency staff assigned to the ED at Condell are re-validated on their ability to draw a blood culture without a break in technique leading to a contaminated specimen

EPIC experience

Support on the Unit:

ED Tech: 5-7 techs during the day; 3 techs overnight from 11p-7a

Charge nurse: may have a patient assignment overnight (rare)

Phlebotomy? RN will draw most labs, but phlebotomy can be called for subsequent lab draws; will always come for traumas

Task RN: assists with break relief; can triage, draw labs, assist with traumas

Alert RN: assists with critical patients in ED

Electronic ICU RN as needed for ICU holds

RT: 24/7 in ED

ED physicians 24/7

Mid-level provider 24/7

Hospitalists 24/7

Centralized tele monitors throughout the unit and bedside, but no tele tech. ED Tech is trained to add/remove tele from patients being admitted

Technology/Equipment:

EMR: EPIC - required

IV pumps: Alaris

Medication dispensing: Pxyis

Ranger massive transfusions

Orientation: (facility and unit)

Day 1: Meet with educator, receive badge, tour of hospital, etc.
