This position is responsible for providing services of both a technical and non-technical nature in the laboratory service areas. Works with considerable independence to perform routine and complex laboratory tests in all assigned departments of the clinical laboratory to provide physicians with rapid and accurate laboratory test results. May perform procedures across the major areas of the laboratory or concentrate in one area such as Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology or Microbiology. I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Follows established procedures to perform all lab tests (including all levels of complexity as defined by CLIA) to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Provides guidance and consultation to Medical Laboratory Technicians in the interpretation of complex testing or unusual findings.
2. Assesses acceptability of specimens for analysis and maintains integrity of the specimens throughout the entire testing process.
3. Performs set up on all laboratory equipment, instruments and apparatus required for specific laboratory testing. Performs routine cleaning and preventative maintenance to ensure continued functioning of equipment. Documents all maintenance procedures performed in a timely and accurate manner.
4. Operates all laboratory equipment per standard operating procedures to ensure accurate patient test results.
5. Performs moderately complex troubleshooting, repair, and modification of a wide range of complex instrumentation in assigned laboratory areas.
6. Performs calibration procedures on instrumentation per departmental procedures in an accurate and timely manner.
7. Adheres to the established quality control policies and procedures in order to guarantee the reliability of data.
8. Informs the appropriate supervisor or designee of unusual or unexpected test results after verification and accessing validity of the original test results.
9. Recognizes critical and /or life-threatening results and notifies the appropriate clinical personnel per hospital policy.
10. Resolves and documents procedural problems encountered in the daily workload; notifies the supervisor of unusual or recurring problems.
11. Maintains all records and documentation needed to comply with TJC, CAP, AABB, Medicare, Medicaid, and hospital laboratory regulations.
12. Orients and instructs new employees and students in clinical laboratory operations and procedures.
13. May perform duties of charge technologist in the absence of the supervisor. May assist supervisor in preparation for Department and Laboratory wide inspections.
14. Obtains and processes specimens from patients as required using established techniques.
15. Assists in the development of new medical laboratory procedures and techniques.
16. Assists with maintaining sufficient inventory of material, supplies and equipment for performance of duties. Notifies appropriate person when supply levels fall to reorder levels. Standard Staffing Level Responsibilities:

1. Bachelor's Degree in a chemical, physical, biological, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution. Preferred:

1. Professional knowledge of medical technology principals, theory, and methodology sufficient to perform clinical laboratory procedures
2. Ability to endure periods of heavy workload and stress
3. Ability to accept constructive feedback and initiate appropriate actions to correct situations
4. Ability to coordinate eyes and hands to fingers rapidly and accurately in making precise movements with speed. Preferred:
1. Minimum one (1) year of clinical laboratory experience. Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements. Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents. III.
