Job Description

The Quality Technician performs detailed inspections of machined, welded, assembled, and fabricated parts used in large industrial equipment for the heavy truck and off-road vehicle industries. This role ensures all parts meet customer specifications and quality standards through visual inspection, use of precision measurement tools, and operation of coordinate measuring machines (CMM). The position also supports root-cause analysis, corrective actions, and continuous improvement within the quality system.

Responsibilities

• Perform visual inspections of machined, welded, assembled, and fabricated parts such as gas tanks, fenders, bumpers, framing, and chassis components to verify conformance to specifications and drawings.
• Use hand inspection tools, including micrometers, calipers, and gauges, to measure and validate part dimensions and tolerances.
• Operate and perform inspections using a coordinate measuring machine (CMM), including an articulated arm CMM, to confirm critical dimensions and geometric tolerances.
• Inspect welds on fabricated components to ensure they meet quality and customer requirements, receiving additional weld inspection training as needed.
• Document and complete all internal and external requests for corrective action, ensuring accurate and timely reporting.
• Create and maintain nonconforming material reports for parts that do not meet specifications.
• Investigate nonconformances by conducting root-cause analysis and document findings, initiating and completing long-term corrective and preventive actions.
• Control the non-conforming product area, ensuring all non-conforming items are properly identified, segregated, and reviewed for possible rework or scrap.
• Ensure no non-conforming product proceeds through the production process unless it has been adequately tested and verified to meet all customer requirements.
• Generate weekly reports detailing current nonconformances and all external quality issues to support management review and decision-making.
• Coordinate cross-functional problem-solving efforts so that all aspects of any quality issue are reviewed and addressed in accordance with the quality system plan.
• Perform in-process audits and inspections on the production floor to verify that parts are produced correctly and that proper procedures and work instructions are followed.
• Conduct calibration activities and properly operate quality inspection equipment, including CMM and hand measurement tools, to ensure accurate and reliable measurements.
• Work closely with production and quality team members to support continuous improvement initiatives and maintain a strong quality culture throughout the facility.
• Complete all required quality documentation, records, and reports accurately and in a timely manner.

Essential Skills

• High school diploma.
• At least 2 years of quality inspection experience.
• Hands-on experience as a quality technician in a heavy industrial environment such as welding, fabrication, or CNC machining.
• Proficiency in performing visual inspections on machined, welded, assembled, and fabricated parts.
• Ability to use precision measurement tools, including micrometers, calipers, and various gauges, for dimensional inspection.
• Experience performing quality checks and quality assurance activities in a production environment.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
• Understanding and practical application of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).
• Experience with quality inspection documentation, including nonconforming material reports and corrective action records.
• Ability to operate and interpret results from CMM equipment, including articulated arm CMMs, or willingness to learn with provided training.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy in measurement, documentation, and reporting.
• Ability to conduct basic root-cause analysis and support corrective and preventive actions.
• Comfort working in a heavy industrial, metal fabrication, and machining environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience inspecting welds in a fabrication or heavy equipment environment, with willingness to receive additional weld inspection training.
• Experience in a metal machining and fabrication shop supporting heavy truck or off-road vehicle components.
• Familiarity with CNC machining processes and robotic welding operations.
• Experience performing in-process audits and working within a formal quality system.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with production, engineering, and quality teams to resolve quality issues.
• Strong written documentation skills for reporting nonconformances, corrective actions, and weekly quality summaries.
• Interest in ongoing training, cross-training, and obtaining additional certifications supported by the employer.
• Continuous improvement mindset and willingness to contribute to process and quality enhancements.

Work Environment

The role is based in a metal machining and fabrication shop that produces components for heavy truck and off-road vehicle applications. The facility includes approximately 20 CNC machine cells, robotic welding equipment, and various fabrication cells. The Quality Technician splits time between the production floor and the quality department, moving between machines and fabrication areas to inspect parts and working at quality stations with CMM equipment and documentation tools. The environment is typical of a heavy industrial shop, with active machinery, fabrication processes, and material handling. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Fort Wayne, IN.

The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $25.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
