Working alongside the Senior Environmental Compliance Specialist, you will help maintain compliant air, CEMS, water, ash, solid-waste, and hazardous-waste programs while building depth in a practical, high-accountability operating environment. The Environmental Compliance Specialist supports the Thermomechanical Treatment Facility and satellite sites across Central and Eastern Massachusetts. The role reports to the Senior Environmental Compliance Specialist and partners closely with the Regional Landfill Manager, Regional Environmental Director, plant operations, maintenance teams, consultants, laboratories, and regulatory agencies. Approximately half of the work supports the thermomechanical treatment facility and half supports transfer stations, landfills, and material-processing facilities. This is not a laboratory, academic, research, or audit-only role. This work requires routine site presence and direct involvement in facility environmental compliance. Please Note - Relocation support may be available for a candidate who otherwise meets the required operating-facility experience. Key Responsibilities
- Support environmental compliance programs for air emissions, CEMS, ash, solid waste, stormwater, wastewater, potable water, and hazardous waste.
- Participate directly in facility permit applications, renewals, modifications, and supporting documentation for construction, operation, and expansion.
- Complete and review environmental testing, monitoring, data, records, and regulatory reports; ensure submittals are accurate, complete, timely, and retained to Reworld and regulatory standards.
- Conduct environmental walkdowns at SEMASS and satellite facilities; document findings, coordinate corrective actions with operations and maintenance, and follow actions through closure.
- Support air-emissions and CEMS activities, including review of emissions records, testing results, equipment logs, and related reports.
- Coordinate environmental testing and compliance work with consultants, engineers, contractors, and testing laboratories.
- Analyze environmental and operational data to identify compliance risks, trends, and improvement opportunities.
- Support regulatory-inspection readiness and communicate technical compliance matters clearly to operating teams and external stakeholders.
- Monitor federal and state regulatory changes and help update permits, test plans, procedures, and compliance strategies.
- Support Reworld growth initiatives and community outreach for mercury and mercury-containing-product diversion.
- Bachelor's degree in environmental science, engineering, engineering technology, chemistry, biology, or a related scientific discipline. Relevant power-plant, industrial-operations, or military experience may be considered in place of a degree.
- At least three years of direct, on-site environmental compliance experience in a heavy-industrial, energy, power-generation, waste-to-energy, landfill, transfer-station, recycling, material-processing, or comparable operating facility.
- Direct participation in environmental permits, permit renewals or modifications, regulatory reports or submissions, facility inspections, and corrective-action follow-up.
- Direct experience with environmental testing, monitoring, data review, documentation, or reporting across multiple programs, such as air, water, solid waste, ash, stormwater, wastewater, potable water, or hazardous waste.
- Familiarity with facility operations and with the practical demands of maintaining compliance in active industrial conditions.
- Experience working with operations, maintenance, contractors, consultants, laboratories, or regulatory agencies.
- Ability to use environmental or operational data-management tools and prepare clear technical records, reports, and presentations.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to meet testing and reporting deadlines across multiple programs and agencies.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams, and SharePoint.
- Note that qualified candidates can point to an operating facility where they personally supported permits or regulatory reports, completed environmental inspections or monitoring, and followed compliance findings through closure.
- Thermomechanical treatment, power-generation, boiler, combustion, air-pollution-control, stack-testing, or CEMS experience.
- Experience at transfer stations, landfills, material-processing facilities, recycling facilities, or other solid-waste operations.
- Massachusetts environmental compliance or MassDEP experience.
- Hazardous-waste experience, including RCRA, DOT, and related documentation.
- Experience coordinating outside testing laboratories, consultants, contractors, or engineers.
- Microsoft Copilot experience.
- Massachusetts Professional Engineer or Drinking Water Operator credential.
- Day travel of approximately 10%-20% to Reworld sites across Eastern and Central Massachusetts.
- Occasional evening, weekend, or holiday work to support testing, permitting, inspections, and compliance deadlines.
- Work throughout active industrial facilities, including hot, cold, dusty, noisy, wet, and odorous areas.
- Ability to wear required PPE and a respirator; climb ladders and work at heights with fall protection; lift heavy objects; and perform tasks such as pushing, pulling, sweeping, and shoveling.
- Reworld is a smoke-free worksite.
