Job Title: Specimen Processor I Job Description
The Specimen Processor I accurately processes blood and urine specimens collected onsite by the phlebotomy team, prepares them for shipment to designated laboratory facilities, and completes light data entry in a fast-paced, high-throughput environment that handles approximately 100 accessions per day. This role focuses on specimen accessioning, sample sorting, and data entry in accordance with established standard operating procedures to support timely and reliable laboratory testing.
Responsibilities- Introduce and prepare biological specimens for laboratory processing in accordance with established standard operating procedures.
- Open primary specimen containers and carefully pour samples into secondary containers to prepare for analysis and testing.
- Verify that patient demographic information matches the test requisition form and associated documentation.
- Perform accurate data entry of patient and specimen information into the computer system for tracking and reporting purposes.
- Meet key production metrics and quality measures to ensure timely and accurate test results.
- Unpack incoming specimens and route them to the appropriate staging areas for further processing.
- Pack and ship specimens to the proper testing facilities when required, following all shipping and handling guidelines.
- Properly prepare, label, and store excess specimen samples for potential future testing or reference.
- Identify, resolve, and clearly document any problem specimens or discrepancies encountered during processing.
- Handle and dispose of medical and chemical waste in compliance with applicable regulations and procedures.
- Follow all environmental health and safety policies and procedures to maintain a safe working environment.
- Operate automated instrumentation under supervision when needed to support specimen processing activities.
- Work both independently and as part of a team to maintain workflow and support daily accession volume of approximately 100 accessions per day.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 0–2 years of work experience, ideally in a medical, laboratory, or production environment.
- Proficient computer and typing skills, including accurate data entry.
- Ability to comfortably handle human biological specimens, including blood, urine, and tissue samples.
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs and work while wearing protective equipment.
- Ability to sit and stand for long periods of time during specimen processing.
- Strong eye-hand coordination to accurately identify and handle specimens by touch and sight.
- High level of attention to detail with strong problem-solving abilities.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and in a team environment.
- Successful completion of a standardized color vision test, used to evaluate if potential accommodation is needed.
- Previous medical or production experience is preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, high-throughput environment.
- Comfort with following detailed standard operating procedures and quality guidelines.
- Reliability in meeting production and quality metrics on a daily basis.
This role is based in a laboratory processing center that handles approximately 100 accessions per day in a fast-paced, high-throughput setting. The typical schedule is Monday through Friday, with hours between 7:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. depending on the day, and an expected workday of 7–8 hours. The position requires frequent sitting and standing, lifting up to 30 lbs, and regular use of protective equipment while handling blood, urine, and tissue specimens. Team members work with computer systems for data entry and may operate automated instrumentation under supervision. The environment emphasizes adherence to environmental health and safety policies, proper handling and disposal of medical and chemical waste, and collaborative teamwork to maintain efficient and accurate specimen processing.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $18.00 - $18.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
