High School Media Specialist

Role Description The High School Media Specialist is a full-time, on-site role located in Birmingham, AL, responsible for managing the school library/media center and supporting teaching and learning across all subject areas. This role involves curating, organizing, and maintaining print and digital resources; assisting students and staff in locating, evaluating, and using information; and promoting a culture of reading and digital literacy. The Media Specialist collaborates with teachers to integrate information literacy, research skills, and technology into classroom instruction, and to design engaging learning experiences. Daily responsibilities include providing reference and readers’ advisory services, teaching students how to use media and technology tools safely and effectively, and maintaining an inviting, inclusive space for study, collaboration, and exploration. The role also includes managing media center schedules and circulation systems, coordinating technology and equipment usage, and communicating regularly with families, staff, and administration about resources and programs. Qualifications Knowledge of library/media center operations, including cataloging, circulation, and collection development. Ability to teach and support information literacy, research skills, and responsible use of digital resources. Experience integrating educational technology and multimedia tools into instruction and student projects. Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills for working with students, families, faculty, and administrators. Organizational and time management skills to coordinate schedules, resources, and multiple concurrent projects. Commitment to creating an inclusive, student-centered environment that supports diverse learning needs and backgrounds. Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree in Library and Information Science, School Library Media, or related field preferred. Valid or eligible state certification as a School Media Specialist/School Librarian (or ability to obtain within a required timeframe).
