Summary / Objective The Aquaculture Technician in Training will demonstrate a passion for fish husbandry, a strong work ethic, attention to detail and perform a variety of aquaculture husbandry duties. Daily farm chores including feeding, mortality removal, and screen scrubbing. Essential Functions Knowledge of the facility including sections, pond numbers, and rearing areas. Knowledge of the Emergency Action Plan. Dependable, trustworthy and consistent in role on the farm. General understanding of the feed schedule. Understanding of the farm workflow. Knowing locations of offline settling ponds and sumps. Knowing locations of influent valves and head ditches. Knowledge of fish barriers and their uses including tail screens, jump boards, graders and other screens. Knowledge of facility equipment. Aware of potential farm hazards. Aware of significant manure build‑up, wasted feed and broken tail screens. Aware of technician’s activities and meaning of withdrawal tags on the ponds. Knowledge of SDS locations and usage. Biosecurity awareness. Knowledge of hatch‑house, outdoor and disinfection procedures. Counting and picking mortality. Ability to handle and select proper grading techniques. Truck maintenance and cleanliness. Cleaning screens. Care of vehicles, equipment, and farm safety. Basic pond hygiene. Cleaning of debris on head ditch grates and first‑use pond entry points. Vacuum or pumping operation and maintenance. Removing and recording mortalities. Monitoring fish behaviour and reporting abnormalities. Assisting with fish transfers. Routine maintenance on equipment and systems, sweeping raceways, cleaning and repairing graders. Completing all tasks based on required safety guidelines. Participating in all safety training. Willingness to perform any farm task regardless of skill or seniority. Practising bio‑security procedures around the farm. Maintaining appropriate housekeeping and sanitation procedures and required biosecurity measures. Providing prompt, friendly and courteous service to internal and external customers. Helping out with other areas on the farm when needed. Other duties as required. Competencies Attention to detail. Commitment to safety. Continuous improvement. Supervisory Responsibility This position has no supervisory responsibilities. Work Environment The job is performed outdoors and routinely exposes the employee to inclement weather conditions. Physical Demands Heavy work, frequent and constant exertion to move objects; lifting up to 50 lbs occasionally. Use of waders, climbing in and out of raceways and on/off trucks. Walking or moving to accomplish tasks frequently. Standing or sitting for sustained periods. Stooping and reaching occasionally. Pushing and pulling with steady force occasionally. Lifting occasionally. Repetitive wrist, hand and finger movements. Touch-based perception of products (size, shape, temperature, texture). Clear hearing required. Manual dexterity for equipment or instrumentation. Clear vision and color discrimination. Position Type / Expected Hours of Work Full‑time position, 5 days a week with potential weekend work. Part‑time work may occur weekly with variable hours based on location needs. Typical schedule starts early morning and ends mid‑afternoon. Travel Local travel is required. Required Education and Experience Ability to speak, read, understand and follow directions with or without accommodations. Driver’s license and good driving record with reliable transportation. Preferred Education and Experience High school education or GED. Aquaculture experience. Aquaculture or related degree. Additional Eligibility Qualifications None.
