Automotive Paint Technician – Emergency Vehicles

Job Description

This role is responsible for preparing, painting, and finishing emergency vehicles—including fire trucks, ambulances, and specialty units—to meet high standards of durability, safety, and appearance. You will use professional automotive painting techniques to deliver high-quality finishes that stand up to demanding service environments.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare steel and aluminum vehicle surfaces by sanding, filling, and cleaning to achieve smooth, paint-ready finishes.
  • Mix and apply primers, base coats, and clear coats according to specifications and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Perform accurate color matching, blending, and detailed touch-ups to meet design and customer requirements.
  • Inspect painted surfaces for defects such as runs, sags, and other imperfections, and correct them to ensure a flawless finish.
  • Complete basic documentation related to jobs, materials used, and processes followed to maintain accurate records.
  • Track paint, coatings, and related materials to support efficient inventory management.
  • Use spray equipment and tools safely and effectively to apply automotive coatings in a controlled manner.
  • Perform thorough paint prep work, including masking, cleaning, and surface conditioning prior to spraying.
  • Follow work orders, specifications, and diagrams to ensure vehicles are finished according to required standards.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, including paint booths and prep stations, in accordance with safety and quality procedures.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 3+ years of professional experience as an automotive paint technician, preferably in vehicle manufacturing, heavy truck, or emergency apparatus such as fire trucks and ambulances.
  • Strong knowledge of automotive paint systems, including primers, base coats, and clear coats.
  • Solid understanding of surface preparation techniques for steel and aluminum, including sanding, filling, and cleaning.
  • Proficiency in spray painting methods and use of sprayer equipment in an automotive or industrial environment.
  • Ability to perform precise color matching, blending, and touch-up work to achieve consistent finishes.
  • Experience in identifying and correcting paint defects such as runs, sags, and surface imperfections.
  • Ability to read and interpret specifications, color schemes, diagrams, and work orders.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, durable finishes on complex vehicle surfaces.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with PPG paint products is preferred.
  • Background in paint prep, including masking, sanding, and cleaning prior to application.
  • Familiarity with documentation and basic recordkeeping related to materials and completed work.
  • Comfort working with emergency vehicles, heavy trucks, or specialty vehicle configurations.
  • Ability to follow established safety procedures and use personal protective equipment correctly.

Work Environment

Work takes place in a manufacturing facility with exposure to paint fumes, dust, noise, and varying temperatures. You will primarily work in a paint booth environment and use personal protective equipment, including respirators, as part of standard safety practices. The role is physically active and involves standing, bending, kneeling, climbing, and lifting up to 50 pounds. A consistent, safety-conscious dress code is supported through a uniform program and appropriate protective gear.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Snyder, NE.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $24.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
