Job Summary 

As an Advanced Ski Patroller, you will join a dedicated group of professionals committed to ski resort mountain safety. Advanced Ski Patrollers are responsible for responding to on-mountain incidents, managing mountain hazards, and playing a critical role in avalanche mitigation. Advanced Ski Patrollers are leaders within the Ski patrol department and maintain high level knowledge, certifications, or expertise in one or more areas of ski patrol

• Skiing to perform opening and closing procedures on the mountain daily
• Communication with other departments
• Maintain safe and easy access with the base patrol and ski patrol duty stations
• Proficient with ropes and rope rescue skills
• Maintain clean, safe, and professional workstations
• Training records kept up and turned into the Ski Patrol Director when completed
• Maintain any appropriate records as set forth by company policy and procedures
• Recognize and correct any safety hazards within the ski patrol department
• Respond to medical emergencies
• Lead avalanche mitigation routes
• Analyze snowpack and assist with forecasting
• Shoveling snow, sometimes deep, heavy wet snow weighing more than 50 pounds per shovel full
• Heavy and awkward lifting of items up to 50 pounds plus
• Provide timely and accurate information concerning weather conditions, grooming or slope conditions and related information to help guest maximize their skiing experience
• Communicate problems to superiors, while showing initiative in handling routine matters
• Complete check off sheets and complete scenarios to full fill requirements for Ski Patrol

Skills and Competencies

• Minimum 4 years of Ski Patrol Experience
• California Blasters License or ability to obtain
• 3 or more years involvement with a class A avalanche area and it’s mitigation practices
• Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) certificate preferred. Wilderness Emergency Care (WEC) accepted with patient contact experience
• CPR certification required
• Expert skiing ability. The ability to safely and skillfully ski and transport a person in a toboggan down an expert ski trail in an expeditious manner within the ski area boundaries
• Advanced skill in one or more ski patrol skills such as avalanche safety, emergency medicine, technical rescue, lift evacuation, mountain operations, or risk management.
• Knowledgeable in the needs of the equipment and standard procedure for its care and safe operation
• Advanced operation of a snowmobile in a variety of terrain and snow conditions
• Must be well groomed and present a good public image
• Good physical condition as this position requires skiing, hiking, shoveling, lifting, and carrying
• Willingness to work during extreme weather conditions
• Safety orientated
• Must be able to pass federal and state back ground checks for the use and handling of explosives for avalanche mitigation

Work Schedules

Weather, snow conditions and the number of guests play a large role in the work scheduling of Bear Valley employees.

When conditions are normal, you may be expected to work 40 up to 48 hours per week, including weekends and holidays. During busy periods – especially the holiday periods in December and the months of January and February – you may be expected to work six (6) days a week.

You must arrange for transportation to work so tha.t you arrive at your designated workstation at the scheduled time. Keep in mind that you will often be required to drive on hilly, snowpacked, and icy road.

  Working Conditions

At any time during the ski season, Bear Valley employees are often required to perform their tasks in high winds, heavy snowfalls, low visibility, rain, and extremely cold or warm temperatures.

Uniforms

A professional appearance at Bear Valley is required. Please wear your name tag and uniform at all times during your scheduled shift. We will provide most of the uniform for you to do your job. This uniform is for work hours ONLY, no exceptions. 

You will be required to provide some items as part of your job.

The quality, color, and style of the items must be approved by your manager prior to being worn to work. All hats worn must have the Bear Valley logo while on shift.

The skiing/riding employee represents a model for safe skiing for both the guest and fellow employees. You are required to be aware of all safe skiing procedures, trail closures, and out-of-bounds policies of the mountain.
