$124.98k - $190kThe-New-York-Times
Business Correspondent, Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It is why we have a world‑renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries and focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world‑class digital and app destination. Our business strategy centers on making journalism so good it is worth paying for. The New York Times is looking for a talented, experienced and versatile correspondent to join the tech pod on the Business desk to cover OpenAI and Anthropic as the artificial intelligence race heats up. You will report on two companies that are reshaping the future with their fast‑advancing technology and becoming new power brokers in Silicon Valley, deal‑making, geopolitics, national security, economics and Wall Street. We need an energetic, determined and collegial journalist who thrives on the most compelling and important storylines. Proven success in building and cultivating sources and reporting on companies are prerequisites. You will work closely with other tech reporters in the United States and around the world. This is a high‑metabolism role with breaking news, second‑day stories, analysis, explainers, profiles, accountability stories and enterprise coverage. You will collaborate across multiple desks and teams including finance, audio, video and graphics. This is an in‑office position based in San Francisco requiring regular attendance in the office four days a week. Some flexibility to work remotely per departmental guidance may be available. Responsibilities You generate original reporting on news, events and trends on Anthropic and OpenAI and identify themes worthy of coverage as breaking news, day news or enterprise. You build a network of sources that inform rich and original reports, news and features. You write with authority, clarity, and independence. You handle breaking news and thoughtful, deep reporting on events, issues, finances and people. You write medium‑ and long‑term enterprise stories and occasional entertaining features. You cover news accurately and efficiently; maintain and cultivate sources and contacts; obtain information through interviews, observations and research. You present facts and analysis in clear written form and in conformity with Times style, length and other requirements, and develop high‑impact stories from broader themes that underpin incremental news developments. You write on deadline; receive and react to feedback and edits. You contribute to and, when required, lead live briefings, join planning meetings and provide live coverage. You report to the Business Tech Editors. Basic Qualifications 5+ years of significant beat reporting and writing experience. Demonstrated ability to produce stories that are crisply written, well organized, and framed to draw in busy, scrolling readers while being accessible. Experience collaborating and partnering with colleagues across the newsroom. Preferred Qualifications A passion for professional development and the ability to learn from everyone around them. A collaborative, genuine and independent spirit that takes satisfaction in both personal growth and the success of teammates. Interest in engaging audiences to deepen their relationship with the Times. A willingness to be flexible as newsroom needs evolve. Bottomless curiosity about the world and a love of news and storytelling. A commitment to tough, fair reporting. Benefits The annual base pay range for this role is $124,979.94 - $190,000 USD, with eligibility for variable pay such as an annual bonus and restricted stock. Benefits include medical, dental and vision coverage, flexible spending accounts, a company‑matching 401(k) plan, paid vacation, sick days, parental leave, tuition reimbursement and professional development programs.
