Interim Accounting Manager (Accounts Payable Focus – Consultative Leadership)

Overview

We are seeking a highly consultative Interim Accounting Manager to step in and partner with leadership to stabilize and transform the Accounts Payable function. This role is ideal for a professional who thrives in ambiguous environments and can quickly assess challenges, implement practical solutions, and build sustainable processes.

The primary focus will be to evaluate current-state inefficiencies, reduce a significant invoice backlog, and design standardized processes and procedures that position the team for long-term success .

Business Context

The organization recently completed an ERP transition from BPIX to Oracle Fusion , which has created disruption within Accounts Payable—particularly due to integration challenges with Basware . These issues have led to inconsistent workflows, processing delays, and increased manual effort across the AP team.

Current Challenges

• Significant Backlog
• Invoice volumes ranging from 1,500 to 4,000 per week have created a backlog that requires immediate attention and structured resolution.
• Process Gaps & Inconsistency
• The AP function currently lacks clearly defined, standardized procedures, leading to inefficiencies and inconsistent execution.
• System Integration Disruptions
• Ongoing issues between Oracle Fusion and Basware are impacting automation and workflow reliability.
• Complex Stakeholder Environment
• Resolution efforts require coordination with external consultants and system partners , adding layers of complexity to decision-making and execution.

What This Role Will Focus On

Consultative Assessment & Strategy

• Quickly assess the current AP environment, identify root causes of backlog and inefficiencies
• Provide practical, consultative recommendations that balance immediate stabilization with long-term improvement
• Serve as a trusted advisor to leadership on AP structure, workflow design, and prioritization

Backlog Reduction & Operational Stabilization

• Develop and execute a clear, actionable plan to reduce invoice backlog
• Introduce prioritization and triage frameworks to improve processing flow
• Work alongside the AP team to ensure progress is both measurable and sustainable

Process Design & Standardization

• Build and document end-to-end AP processes and procedures (invoice intake through payment)
• Establish clear roles, responsibilities, and workflow checkpoints
• Implement best practices that improve efficiency, accuracy, and scalability
• Ensure processes are practical, adopted, and repeatable

AP Team Oversight & Enablement

• Provide hands-on leadership and guidance to the AP team
• Align the team to new processes, performance expectations, and priorities
• Coach team members through change and reinforce accountability

Systems & Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Partner with internal stakeholders and external consultants to address system and integration challenges
• Support testing, validation, and optimization of system workflows
• Translate operational needs into actionable system improvements

Performance Visibility & Continuous Improvement

• Establish KPIs and reporting to track backlog reduction, processing efficiency, and accuracy
• Create a cadence of performance review and continuous improvement
• Drive toward a steady-state, predictable AP operation

Ideal Candidate Profile

• Proven success in a highly consultative interim/contract role , stepping into complex or underperforming AP environments
• Deep experience leading Accounts Payable functions through transformation or ERP change (Oracle Fusion preferred)
• Strong background in process design, documentation, and standardization
• Experience with invoice automation tools (Basware or similar)
• Ability to balance strategic thinking with hands-on execution
• Strong stakeholder management skills, including working with external consultants and cross-functional teams
• Change agent mindset with the ability to influence, coach, and drive adoption
