This position has regular contact with or control over Indian Children and Vulnerable Adults. In compliance with Federal Law, this position will not be filled by an applicant with any felonious offense or any of two or more misdemeanor offenses under Federal, State, or Tribal law involving crimes of violence; sexual assault, molestation, exploitation, contact, or prostitution; crimes against persons; or offenses committed against children.
GENERAL SUMMARY
The Physician provides comprehensive, patient-centered primary care to the Nisqually community, addressing acute and chronic medical conditions with a strong emphasis on preventive care. Responsibilities include conducting routine check-ups, health screenings, and risk assessments, while educating patients on healthy lifestyles and disease prevention strategies. The Physician delivers culturally competent care that supports the physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being of patients across the lifespan. Active participation in community outreach, wellness initiatives, and collaborative care with an interdisciplinary team is essential. The Physician upholds the highest standards of patient confidentiality, ethical practice, and professional integrity.
This role requires maintaining confidentiality, ensuring the accuracy and security of records, and fostering positive relationships with employees, customers, and community members. Strong written and verbal communication skills, along with exceptional customer service, are essential. Regular attendance is required, and occasional evening or weekend hours may be necessary to meet project deadlines. A professional, well-groomed appearance is expected at all times.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties are representative of the responsibilities assigned to this position. Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.
Patient Care:
- Comply with all applicable Tribal policies, federal healthcare regulations, and Indian Health Services (IHS) standards of care.
- Provide care that is sensitive to and respectful of the cultural values, beliefs, and traditions of the Nisqually community.
- Understand and address the unique healthcare needs of the tribal population through culturally aware assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care.
- Engage in continuous learning about Nisqually cultural norms and practices to build trust and improve communication with patients and families.
- Deliver care that acknowledges historical trauma and health disparities affecting the community, promoting respect, holistic well-being, and community health.
- Collaborate with patients and healthcare team members to adapt treatment plans that integrate traditional healing practices with Western medicine, when appropriate.
- Promote an integrated, culturally responsive care experience in partnership with other healthcare providers.
- Support the Tribe's commitment to self-determination and health equity by providing care that empowers the community and strengthens Tribal health infrastructure.
Preventative Care:
- Focus on proactive care to prevent illnesses and promote long-term wellness.
- Ensure patients receive appropriate preventive services tailored to their individual health needs.
Patient Education:
- Provide clear, culturally relevant information on health maintenance, disease prevention, and treatment options.
- Educate patients on their health conditions and treatment plans to empower informed decision-making and support self-care.
Care Coordination:
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including behavioral health, dental, traditional healing, and external providers, to ensure seamless and high-quality care.
- Facilitate communication and coordination among healthcare professionals to support continuity of care.
Documentation:
- Maintain accurate, timely, and thorough medical records in compliance with regulatory standards and organizational policies.
- Document detailed and precise patient assessments, diagnoses, treatment plans, case management, and progress notes, prevention strategies, referrals, and follow-up care, while strictly adhering to confidentiality guidelines as outlined by applicable laws and regulations.
- Utilize the Clinic's Electronic Health Record (EHR) system effectively to document patient care and support clinical decision-making.
Community Health:
- Actively participate in community health initiatives and outreach programs, including health fairs, screenings, workshops, and other activities that address community-specific health needs.
- Provide consultation, training, and cross-program support to enhance health outcomes in the community.
- Contribute to quality improvement efforts, utilization reviews, audits, and policy development to ensure excellence in care delivery.
- Participate in the development of departmental annual work plans, progress reports, and monthly administrative reports.
- Flexible and adaptable in responding to changes in patient needs, clinical priorities, or community health initiatives.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
- Must possess a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree.
- Must have completed an accredited residency program in family medicine.
- Must be board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) or the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians (AOBFP).
- Must possess and maintain current, active and unrestricted DEA registration.
- Must obtain and maintain BLS certification within ninety (90)-days of employment.
- Experience with electronic health records (EHR) required.
- Must hold and maintain an active, unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Washington.
- Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's license and maintain a driving record that meets the minimum requirements established by Nisqually Indian Tribes' vehicle insurance provider.
- Successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen and criminal background check.
- The ability to work with vulnerable populations, including adults and children.
- Must pass a State and National (FBI) criminal history background check prior to employment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge of the Nisqually Indian Tribe's history, customs, and traditions, with the ability to demonstrate cultural sensitivity in clinical and community settings.
- Experience working with Federally Recognized Tribes.
- Knowledge of Native American health issues, including historical trauma, health disparities, and culturally grounded approaches to healing.
- Familiarity with integrating traditional healing practices alongside Western medicine.
- Experience with the Indian Health Services (IHS), tribal health systems, or Public Health Service.
- Demonstrated commitment to holistic, community-based care that emphasizes prevention, health education, and cultural respect.
- Experience in participating in quality improvement initiates, clinical audits, or healthcare accreditation processes.

Knowledge of:
· Knowledge of primary care principles, including assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of acute and chronic conditions across the lifespan, using evidence-based practices.
· Understanding of pharmacology, including the use and effects of both common and specialty medications.
· Strong awareness of and respect for tribal cultures, values, traditions and historical trauma. Knowledge of how cultural and social determinants impact patient care and outcomes.
· Familiarity with traditional healing practices and the ability to integrate them thoughtfully with Western medical care, when appropriate.
· In-depth knowledge of HIPAA, tribal policies, and federal healthcare regulations, and Indian Health Services (IHS) standards of care, with a strong commitment to maintaining compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and ethical guidelines.
· Knowledge of professional code of ethics and a strong commitment to ethical decision-making in clinical practice, including patient autonomy, informed consent, and professional integrity.
Skill in:
· Skill in explaining complex medical information in a clear, compassionate, and culturally appropriate manner to patients, families, and healthcare teams. Strong patient education skills to promote self-care and informed decision-making.
· Proficient in accurate and timely documentation using Electronic Health Records (EHR) in compliance with clinical and regulatory standards.
· Effective in working with a multidisciplinary team, including other health departments, to provide coordinated, holistic care.
· Skill in participating in community outreach, wellness events, and health education initiatives tailored to community-specific needs.
· Excellent oral and written communication skills; able to follow instructions, delegate tasks, provide feedback, and collaborate professionally with internal and external stakeholders.

· Ability to deliver patient-centered care that is culturally sensitive, trauma-informed, and tailored to the needs of Native communities.
