Minimum Qualifications: Meets statutory KRS 158.441 requirements to be a School Resource Officer. A four‑year degree is preferred but not required. Reports to: BCPS Police Chief Consults with: Building Principal and Safe Schools Director Job Goal: Present on school property as support to the school as a law enforcement officer, law‑related advisor, and law‑related instructor. Basic Function: Perform a variety of law enforcement activities for an assigned school district, including enforcing state statutes, protection of life and property, suppression of criminal activity, apprehension and prosecution of offenders, regulation of non‑criminal conduct, preservation of public peace, enforcement of traffic and parking regulations, and conducting investigations. Performance Responsibilities: Develop a positive, supportive relationship with students and staff, and continue to engage and work with the community. Collaborate with faculty to deliver presentations on law‑related education, drug and alcohol prevention, and life skills programs. Encourage individual and small group discussions (in‑person or virtual) with students, based on the material presented in class, to further establish rapport. Familiarize with the Bullitt County Code of Acceptable Behavior, and may serve on the annual committee to aid its development. Make referrals to counselors when the SRO detects signs of extreme stress/trauma in students. Work with staff/counselors/family resource coordinators to locate external professional community resources. Supervise school parking slots and conduct routine physical campus security as needed. Cooperate with random student drug testing and drug dog agencies to enhance prevention efforts. Report suspected child abuse, dependency, and neglect to proper authorities and complete required forms. Collaborate with other SROs in the district schools. Deter trespassers from entering or remaining in school buildings without proper authorization. Assist the front office staff regarding the Visitor Entry Protocol system. Apply CPTED standards and protocols and use the Risk Assessment Tool provided by the Department of Criminal Justice Training Center and the State Security Marshal. Participate in school functions such as dances, sporting events, and graduation ceremonies as possible. Monitor school cameras from desktop and mobile device. Update principals on the Safe School/School Emergency Plan and the safety or emergency app. Show presence during student activities/transitions and maintain trusting relationships with students and staff. Report persons exhibiting undesirable behavior to appropriate officials and act appropriately when criminal issues arise. Assist disciplinary decisions when a student may commit or is about to commit a crime. Make oneself available for conference or legal involvement with students, parents, and staff to address law enforcement or substance abuse matters. Attend school‑related council or admin meetings to support the SRO program. Help teachers develop trusting relationships by sitting in classrooms or meetings. Collaborate with principal to prevent or minimize dangerous situations on or near campus. Conduct necessary formal law enforcement interviews with students or staff in compliance with policies. Coordinate with local law enforcement, fire departments, and EMS agencies. De‑escalate conflicts and use restorative practices. Participate in threat assessment teams at assigned schools. Attend training activities for school resource officers as directed. Affirm role as a law‑enforcement officer by wearing uniform unless inappropriate for activities. Prepare and complete accurate reports of crimes, vehicular accidents, and other incidents. Maintain equipment in proper working condition. Assist other law‑enforcement officers as needed. Maintain confidentiality of records and information according to procedures. Assist injured persons and determine appropriate action. Conduct parent conferences regarding criminal or code violations. Refer incidents occurring outside authority or jurisdiction. Execute other duties assigned by the Chief or Superintendent Designee. Knowledge of: Elements and application of state statutes. Geographic area, district facilities, school personnel, and community members of assigned district. Applicable sections of Kentucky Administrative Regulations and other applicable laws. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy. Laws, rules and regulations related to assigned activities. Ability to: Perform a variety of law enforcement duties at an assigned district. Qualifications Experience: Must have extensive experience in law enforcement; resume required. Experience with school‑based law enforcement or youth is highly desirable. Education and Certification: Meet all legal requirements for establishing a school district police department as outlined by KLEC and KSP. Complete a certified basic training academy. High‑school diploma, GED certificate, or progress toward GED as required by Kentucky law. Skills: Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Capable of fostering a positive, proactive approach to school safety. Licenses and Other Requirements: Valid Kentucky driver's license. Position Details Hours: 8 hours per day (plus a 30‑minute unpaid lunch) 8:00 am–4:30 pm Contract Length: 187 days per year 170 school days 4 holidays 7 planning days 2 extended days (opening & closing) 4 PL days Contracted days will be prorated based on the start date.
