SEIU Local 121RN (), a powerful voice for Registered Nurses and Licensed Professionals in Southern California, is looking for an External Lead Organizer . Local 121RN represents more than 11,500 Nurses and Licensed Professionals working in hospitals in Los Angeles, Ventura and Riverside counties. Local 121RN is leading the fight to win strong contracts, enact strong workplace protections and strengthen staffing standards and laws in the health care industry.

Job Summary:
This role is responsible for assisting with developing and leading External Organizers on the cutting edge of progressive activism, building power for healthcare workers and contributing to the Local’s membership growth.

This role will require someone who is capable of leading a campaign from start to finish, including assisting with development of strategies, building and developing a small team, and executing a strategic campaign plan with minimal guidance.

The Lead Organizer reports to the Organizing Director or designee. 

Essential Functions:

• With minimal guidance, must have ability to run NLRB elections and to develop campaign strategies.
• Must have the ability to move their own turf (minimum of 50 workers) while simultaneously providing campaign direction and guidance to Organizers with turf of 100+ workers. 
• Must have the ability to mentor, supervise and direct the work of a minimum of three (3) Organizers.
• Ability to build a team and to communicate clearly and persuasively, verbally and in writing.
• Capacity to establish and cultivate relationships with workers and staff from diverse backgrounds.
• Plan and execute actions and events to support worker organizing efforts.
• Ability to think critically and assist with development of strategic outreach efforts to non-union workers.
• Ability to identify, recruit and develop worker leaders and to develop Organizers in this area.
• Ability to plan for and facilitate individual and group meetings with workers.
• Must have excellent follow-up skills.

Other Requirements:

• Knowledge of the NLRA, FLSA, Title 22, Cal/OSHA, etc.
• Proficiency in MS Outlook, Word, Excel and membership databases.
• Get out the Vote events (All Staff): Participate in occasional neighborhood canvassing events.
• Civic Actions (All Staff): Support our nurses and licensed professionals during civic events through attendance and participation. This may include, but is not limited to, annual events such as May Day and other Labor-related events including marches, parades, strikes, lawful protests and rallies, or other civic actions and activities.
• Some cross-over work with internal/representation as needed.
• Other duties as assigned.

Job Specifications and Requirements - Qualifications, Skills, Experience and Attributes:

• 3+ years of experience on successful organizing campaigns as an Organizer or Lead, preferably in the healthcare sector.
• 5+ years of experience in leading and developing organizers on new organizing campaigns, preferably in the healthcare sector.
• Verifiable experience in individually organizing a minimum turf size of 150 new members into the Union as an Organizer.
• Verifiable experience in leading and winning new organizing campaigns of no less than 300 workers, from beginning to end, with minimal supervision.
• Ability to discern priorities, meet competing deadlines, and juggle a large workload in a fast-paced campaign environment.
• Strong ability to connect and build professional relationships with registered nurses and licensed professionals of varying backgrounds.
• Ability to think critically, independently, learn and understand complex issues quickly.
• Ability to perform with frequent interruptions and/or distractions.
• Ability to adapt to frequent changes in workload.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills in English required.
• Ability to communicate in Mandarin or Tagalog is a plus (but not required).
• Ability to drive/travel throughout California frequently and for long periods of time (will be required).
• Some out-of-state travel will be required.
• Ability and willingness to work long and irregular hours, including weekends, evenings and holidays. This is a requirement.
• A current, valid driver’s license and working automobile with up-to-date auto insurance are required.

• Regularly operate a computer, cell phone, and other general office equipment.
• Stand, walk, and/or sit for long periods of time.
• Move through the office to access file cabinets and operate office equipment
• Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
• Traverse in the office and in an outside environment during various types of events. This may include moving, or being stationary, for multiple hours, in outside conditions. Traversing may include ascending/descending stairs.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus.
• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but can elevate during events and campaign activities.
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions.
• May include exposure to large crowds.

Salary and Benefits: 
Salary range is between $100,000 and $110,000 annually, depending on verifiable years of experience. Local 121RN provides a generous benefits package that includes fully paid medical, dental, and vision plans, generous paid time off and a defined benefit retirement plan.
