The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) provides a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public while supporting economic development and environmental stewardship across New Mexico. The Geographic Information System (GIS) Unit, within the Applications Bureau, supports the department by developing, maintaining, and administering geospatial systems, applications, data, and tools across ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Online, and desktop GIS environments. The unit helps staff visualize, analyze, manage, and share transportation-related information statewide.

As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to received three (3) days of administrative leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.


Why does the job exist?

This position exists to support NMDOT¿s geospatial technology needs by maintaining GIS systems, developing spatial applications, supporting ArcGIS Enterprise and ArcGIS Online environments, and providing technical assistance to agency staff. The position helps ensure that GIS data, applications, and services are reliable, accessible, secure, and aligned with the department¿s transportation planning, operations, asset management, and decision-making needs.


How does it get done?

The primary responsibilities of this position will include:

* Supporting agency geospatial operations by administering and maintaining ArcGIS Server, Portal for ArcGIS, ArcGIS Online, enterprise geodatabases, GIS web services, desktop GIS software, and related applications.
* Troubleshooting GIS system and application issues.
* Developing and maintaining internal and cloud-based GIS applications.
* Managing GIS content and user access.
* Supporting GIS data workflows.
* Assisting customers with GIS technology.
* Producing maps, graphics, reports, and other cartographic products for agency use.


Who are the customers?

This work is performed for business units throughout NMDOT, including planning, design, maintenance, traffic, environmental, asset management, districts, and executive leadership. The position also supports external partners and the traveling public when GIS applications, services, or data are shared outside the agency.


Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have preferred education and/or experience in the following:

* Supporting Esri software, including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise, and ArcGIS Online.
* Administering or supporting ArcGIS Server, Portal for ArcGIS, web maps, web applications, feature services, and hosted content.
* Gathering requirements for incoming project requests.
* Developing, maintaining, and supporting GIS web applications, dashboards, forms, and field data collection tools.
* Managing GIS data, enterprise geodatabases, and spatial data workflows.
* Creating clear, accurate cartographic products, maps, graphics, and reports.
* Using Python, Arcade, or SQL to automate GIS tasks, improve workflows, or support GIS applications.
* Providing customer support, training, and technical guidance to GIS users with varying levels of experience; and
* Communicating technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.


Minimum Qualification

Associate Degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems (MIS), Information Technology, Engineering, or similar technical degree and two (2) years of experience in software programming. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling four (4) years may substitute for the required education and experience


Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver¿s License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.


Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required.
