Head Custodian

Custodian Position Function: Under the direct supervision of thePrincipal, Director of Facilities, and Business Manager, performs generalcleaning and maintenance in school buildings and grounds; maintains equipmentin functional condition; and provides cleaning and custodial assistance tostudents, teachers, visitors and others as necessary. Performs related duties and general maintenancework as required. Essential Functions: Checks andsecures building at beginning and end of shift for the purpose of ensuring thesafety and cleanliness of the building. Cleans rooms,hallways, cafeterias, restrooms, offices, stairways, and other areas ofbuilding according to school district standards. Sweeps, mops,buffs, strips, and waxes floors. Cleans rugs,carpets, upholstered furniture, and blinds. Washes walls,ceilings, woodwork, windows, doors, and sills. Removes graffiti,cleans glass areas. Replaces lightbulbs. Sets up andbreaks down chairs, tables and equipment in meeting rooms, and functionalrooms. Clears snow fromentrances and walks, and spreads sand and ice melting chemicals. Performsgrounds-keeping duties, clears debris and maintains grounds. Receivesdeliveries and assists in unloading trucks and storing supplies. Delivers suppliesand materials to classrooms, bathrooms and other areas of the building. Emptieswastebaskets; picks up and removes trash and assists in recycling program. Additional Duties: Performs generalcleaning, and repair work, particularly during school vacations. Assists parentsand other visitors to school buildings with special events and programs. Equipment Uses handtools of trade and related power equipment, including brooms, mops, floorcleaning and waxing machines, vacuum cleaners, snow blowers, shovels, powermower and hand tools. Safety Requirements Follows allapplicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper use oftools and power equipment used in the performance of duties. Wears appropriatesafety gear, including masks. Must comply withschool district's chemical hygiene program and follow MSDS sheets. Travel Requirements Occasional travel between schools, orbetween schools and central office, may be required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ability to followoral or written work orders from supervisor, and to coordinate work withprincipal and others. Ability to read,write and speak English fluently. Ability todescribe orally or in writing cleaning, maintenance or repair problems asneeded. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staffand others contacted in the course of work. Ability to add,subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure. Ability to workin poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow. Ability to workabove ground from ladders and automatic lifts. Ability toperform work according to standard procedures and schedule set forth bysupervisor(s). Physical and Mental Demands, WorkHazards Works in standardoffice and school building environments. Ability to workoutdoors in inclement weather conditions. QualificationsProfile: Any combinationof education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge forsuccessful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications would beequivalent to: High SchoolDiploma or completion of sufficient education to successfully perform theduties of the position.
