Job Description
ICU Registered Nurse (RN)

General Information

We are seeking experienced ICU Registered Nurses (RN) to join our mixed unit that includes MICU, SICU, CICU, and TICU. This is a challenging role within our critical care environment, where staff will not float into the CVICU unless they have the requisite experience in that specialty.

Minimum Experience Requirements

• A minimum of 2 years of ICU experience is preferred.
• For candidates with 1.5 years of ICU experience and significant RN experience outside of ICU, approval from the management team will be required.
• First-time travelers will not be considered.
• Travelers must reside at least 100 miles away from any local facility.

Patient Population

Candidates will care for complex ICU patients including surgical, medical, cardiac (preferred), neuro, and trauma cases. Common diagnoses may include:

• ARDS
• Myocardial Infarction (MI)
• CVA/TIA
• COVID-19
• Post-cardiac catheterization and post-surgical cases
• Multiple system trauma and heavy trauma patients

Preferred Qualifications

• Cardiac experience (CABG/TAVR) within 24 to 48 hours post-operation is preferred.
• Experience with IV medications, including vasopressors, sedation, and paralytics.
• Experience with hemodynamic lines, proning, ventilator management, and telemetry.
• Strong critical thinking and assessment skills.
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with critical patients.
• Experience with Impella, IABP, and CRRT is strongly preferred.

Required Certifications

• BLS
• ACLS
• NIHSS
• TNCC (required)

Education Requirements

Candidates must have completed a nursing education program approved by a board of nursing and must hold a Registered Nurse (RN) license.

Unit Support and Staffing

• CNA support: 1-2 Nurse Aides per unit + mobility float aide.
• Charge Nurse: 2 Clinical RNs overseeing all ICUs.
• Phlebotomy services available for peripheral blood draws only.
• IV/VAT Team: ICU Clinical RNs place all midlines.
• Resource Nurse available depending on staffing needs.
• Respiratory Therapy available 24/7.
• Medical staff includes 3 intensivists during the day and 2 on nights plus Advanced Practice Providers (APP) at night.

Orientation and Scheduling

• Orientation includes:
  
  
  • (1) 8-hour hospital orientation.
  • (1) 4-hour iLearn period.
  • (2) 12-hour shifts of unit orientation.
  • (1) additional 12-hour shift for independent training for travelers working 48 hours per week.
• Weekend rotation is generally scheduled for every other weekend but not guaranteed.
• Holidays: No requests for time off during holidays and specific events (e.g., Sturgis Bike Rally).
• Up to 7 days of time off can be approved, contingent on contract requirements.

General Information
Beds: 39 - MICU, SICU, CICU, TICU - mixed unit
Minimal Experience:
2 years of ICU experience EXCLUDING travel experience is most preferred
If they have 1.5 years of ICU experience EXCLUDING travel, please have CRT send to management team for approval
Will you accept a first-time traveler? No. Minimum one prior travel assignment
Traveler must reside >100 miles outside of facility
Permanent staff must wait 1 year before returning as a traveler
Patient Types:
Complex ICU patients ranging from surgical, medical, cardiac (preferred), neuro and trauma
Diagnoses include: ARDS, MI, CVA/TIA, COVID, s/p cardiac cath, post-surgical, multiple system trauma - heavy trauma population
Cardiac experience is preferred (not required): CABG/TAVR - 24 to 48 hrs post op experience is preferred but not required for travelers
Will not take fresh open hearts unless they are experienced, and the facility felt comfortable with this - given to permanent staff
