Since 1974, Life Action Ministries has existed to ignite movements of authentic Christianity. Since 1995, Life Action Camp has focused that mission specifically on families. Located on the shores of Clear Lake in Buchanan, Michigan, Life Action Camp welcomes families, couples, and individuals to family camps and retreats where they can pause from the busyness of life, reconnect with God and one another, and return home refreshed to engage their communities and make disciples. Life Action Camp is a programming location of Life Action Ministries. Every staff member at Life Action Camp-whether serving guests directly or maintaining the grounds behind the scenes-plays a vital role in creating an environment where lives can be changed. The Groundskeeper's work is ministry. A well-maintained campus communicates care, order, excellence, and hospitality to every family who comes through the gate. POSITION SUMMARY:
The Groundskeeper is responsible for the day-to-day care, maintenance, safety, and beautification of the grounds, landscaping, trails, waterfront areas, and outdoor common areas of Life Action Camp.
This position helps ensure that the Camp property is safe, attractive, functional, and well-maintained throughout the year. The Groundskeeper works collaboratively with the Facilities and Operations team to prepare the campus for guests, family camps, retreats, and special events while demonstrating excellent stewardship of the ministry's property. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Grounds & Landscaping
Mow, trim, edge, and maintain lawns, fields, and common green spaces throughout the Camp property.
Plant, prune, mulch, fertilize, and weed flower beds, shrubs, and landscaped areas.
Maintain the appearance and cleanliness of outdoor areas surrounding guest facilities and common spaces.
Maintain hiking trails, walking paths, and outdoor recreation areas in safe and usable condition.
Maintain athletic and recreational areas, including volleyball, basketball, soccer, Ga-Ga Ball, and archery/challenge course areas.
Maintain grounds surrounding cabins, cottages, chalets, bunkhouses, and other guest accommodations.
Maintain RV sites and outdoor utility areas in clean and functional condition.
Equipment & Property Maintenance
Safely operate and maintain grounds equipment, including mowers, trimmers, tractors, and other power and hand tools.
Perform routine maintenance on grounds equipment and coordinate necessary repairs.
Monitor irrigation systems and outdoor lighting and report or address issues as appropriate.
Identify hazards such as fallen limbs, uneven walkways, drainage concerns, or other property issues and communicate larger maintenance needs to the Operations Director.
Assist the Facilities and Operations team with general property maintenance as needed.
Seasonal Responsibilities
Perform spring grounds cleanup and preparation.
Complete fall leaf removal and seasonal property cleanup.
Assist with snow and ice management on walkways, drives, and other outdoor areas.
Respond to storm damage and assist with debris removal.
Prepare the grounds for guest arrivals, family camps, retreats, and other ministry events throughout the year.
Ministry & Team Responsibilities
Work collaboratively with the Facilities and Operations team to maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming campus.
Interact with guests, volunteers, CREW members, and fellow staff in a warm, helpful, and hospitable manner.
Represent Life Action Camp and Life Action in a manner consistent with its mission, values, and ministry philosophy.
Participate in staff devotions, prayer, and other aspects of the spiritual life of the Camp community.
Perform other grounds, property, and light facilities duties as assigned by the Operations Director. QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
Previous experience in landscaping, groundskeeping, horticulture, or property maintenance is preferred.
A strong work ethic, willingness to learn, and demonstrated ability to work responsibly may be considered in place of direct experience.
Working knowledge of lawn care, landscaping practices, and outdoor property maintenance.
Ability to safely operate and maintain mowers, tractors, trimmers, and other grounds equipment.
Basic troubleshooting skills related to irrigation systems, small engines, and outdoor equipment are preferred.
Valid driver's license in good standing.
Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, prioritize responsibilities, and take initiative.
Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team and respond appropriately to changing needs and priorities. SPIRITUAL & MINISTRY QUALIFICATIONS:
A growing, personal relationship with Jesus Christ and agreement with the mission, values, and ministry philosophy of Life Action Ministries.
A servant's heart and a genuine desire to support the ministry of Life Action Camp through excellence in behind-the-scenes work.
Willingness to participate in staff devotions, prayer, and the spiritual life of the Camp community.
A warm, hospitable demeanor toward guests, volunteers, CREW members, and fellow staff.
A desire to contribute to an environment where families can reconnect with God and one another. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow.
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
Ability to frequently bend, kneel, stoop, walk, stand, and perform physical tasks for extended periods.
Ability to safely operate motorized grounds equipment and hand and power tools.
Ability to work across a large, multi-building camp property.
Early morning, evening, and weekend work may occasionally be required, particularly during peak camp and retreat seasons.
Ability to respond to seasonal and weather-related property needs as necessary. Compensation: Compensation for this position is funded through Ministry Partner Development (MPD). A salary goal will be established, and Life Action Ministries will provide the training, coaching, and resources needed to help you build a team of ministry partners to reach that goal. All approved ministry-related business expenses are covered by Life Action Ministries. Benefits for full-time employees include health insurance, life insurance, long-term disability insurance, and paid vacation. Complete details will be provided with a formal offer of employment.
