Position Information Position Title: College Advisor - PT Department: Student Support Program Location: Lincoln Job Category: Professional Job Type: PT Posting Number: 02148 Position End Date: N/A Position Summary Under the general direction and supervision of the Administrative Director of Advising, the College Advisor provides holistic advising to an assigned cohort of students from the point of admission throughout their academic career at Southeast Community College. This is a part-time regular position. The usual work hours are generally scheduled between 7:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, requiring a 29-hour workweek. Essential Functions Proactive and Developmental On-boarding: Evaluate admission test scores and transcripts, analyze pre-orientation student assessments, recommend interventions when appropriate, and advise students based on their interests, strengths, values, and goals. Advise students at New Student Enrollment and consistently engage with students from admission through the first term to provide messaging, connection, and support. Career Advising: Assist students in clarifying and confirming academic paths and career choices. This may involve interpreting career assessments and discussing results with students to develop academic, career, and personal plans aligned with their interests, values, and strengths. Academic Advising: Provide first-term academic advising for students within their assigned cohort. Explain general education and degree requirements and evaluate transfer credit. Provide information and guidance on traditional and distance learning options, and assist in developing an academic plan that integrates with life responsibilities. Ongoing Success Coaching: Serve as a continuous resource to students within their cohort. Support, educate, and advocate for students experiencing challenges, and refer to SCC services or community agencies as needed. Program Planning and Implementation: Plan, develop, and implement programs and services to increase student success and retention. Collaboration: Interact with faculty, staff at SCC and other colleges, and external agencies to enhance student success. Promote holistic advising among faculty, staff, and students and collaborate on joint activities within the cohort. Data Management: Use designated tools to record and manage data on student progress. Monitor student success and retention and provide individualized support. Professional Development: Participate in professional development to stay current on best practices in advising and student success. Promote a Culture of Belonging: Support an environment where all students and college community feel welcomed and valued. Adhere to college policies on access, fair employment, and equal opportunities. Additional Duties (Marginal Functions) Participate in local, state, and regional associations related to advising, career planning, retention, or related issues. Provide advising and retention information to faculty, staff, and others as requested. Assist the Administrative Director of Advising with resource materials for the Advising Center. Other duties as assigned, including potential teaching/co-teaching of Student Success courses, committee work, or opportunities within or outside SCC. Occasional travel as required. Perform other duties within the division/program as assigned. Work varied days, hours, shifts, locations, and campuses as needed; hours may vary and are subject to modification. Emergency or special activities may require outside regular hours. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of and experience with applying professional advising methods in diverse situations. Ability to work with a diverse group of students, staff, and the public. Ability to collect, arrange, and interpret data in written and verbal formats. Ability to describe educational programs and occupations clearly in writing and verbally. Strong computer skills and ability to navigate student data systems; experience with online research and career/education assessment tools. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds for short distances and move tables, chairs, and media equipment. Effective written and verbal communication skills. The ability to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in education, business, psychology, or related field from an accredited college or university. Two (2) years of professional experience working with students in an educational environment. A master’s degree may substitute for one year of experience. Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree in education, business, psychology, or related field from an accredited college or university. Experience in higher education settings in advising, success coaching, retention, or student affairs. Experience collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data; experience working with diverse student populations. Salary and Schedule Salary: $23.96 per hour Benefits: Part-time regular employees may participate in the TIAA retirement plan and enroll in supplemental benefits and group vision plan through employee-paid premiums.
