MATHEMATICS TEACHER JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: Mathematics Teacher

SUPERVISES: Directly supervises students assigned to his/her classes. Indirectly supervises all students.

JOB GOAL: To help each pupil develop competence in basic and/or advanced mathematical skills and an understanding of the structure of mathematics; to motivate each student to apply mathematical understanding and skills in the solution of practical problems; to encourage pupils to develop their special talents in the field of mathematics.

QUALIFICATIONS:


1. Possess valid Alabama Teacher's Certificate.


2. Proper endorsement in the appropriate mathematics teaching field.


3. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board might find appropriate and acceptable.

REPORTS TO: School Principal

SALARY: To be determined commensurate with local salary matrix, credentials, and experience.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Teach one or more mathematics courses (basic/advanced) to secondary pupils utilizing the course of study adopted by the Board of Education and appropriate curriculum publications as guidelines in teaching individual course content.
2. Demonstrate mathematical concepts using models, chalkboard, overhead projector, and other standard or teacher prepared instructional aids.
3. Maintain an auditable record of pupil attendance and make daily reports.
4. Control assigned district-owned instructional equipment and supplies to prevent loss or abuse.
5. Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment in the classroom where several kinds of activities may be taking place simultaneously.
6. Instruct pupils in importance of accuracy, neatness, efficiency, resourcefulness, and good work habits.
7. Evaluate, select and requisition books, instructional aids, equipment, and instructional supplies and maintain required inventory records.
8. Meet and instruct assigned classes in the location and at the times designated.
9. Develop and maintain a classroom environment conducive to effective learning within the limits of the resources provided by the district.
10. Prepare written lesson plans with appropriate objectives and utilizes appropriate state standards, guides, tasks lists, etc.
11. Encourage students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
12. Employ instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting stated objectives.
13. Strive to implement, by instruction and action, the district's and school's philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
14. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
15. Evaluate student progress on a regular basis.
16. Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law, policy, and administrative regulation.
17. Assist the administration in implementing all policies and/or rule governing student life and conduct, and maintain order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
18. Make provisions for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional environment when required or requested to do so under reasonable circumstances.
19. Attend and participate in faculty and other meetings as scheduled by administration.
20. Cooperate with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives, and methods.
21. Sponsor student extracurricular organizations as requested.
22. Work to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning both the broad academic and behavioral progress of all assigned students. Provides nine week and mid-nine week progress reports as well as keeping students and parents aware of at least weekly progress.
23. Establish and maintain cooperative relations with others.
24. Provide for his/her own professional growth through an ongoing program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences, and/or advances coursework at institutions of higher learning. Meets at least minimum school district requirements for the annual number of inservice hours.
25. Assist the administration with and/or supervises entry and exit of students while providing supervision of the commons area as assigned.
26. In order to maximize student achievement, teachers should be able to assess student abilities as related to desired educational goals, objectives and student outcomes.
27. Develop and implement a program of instruction that meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of students and is consistent with local and state study and curriculum guides.
28. Plan and employ a variety of appropriate instructional/learning strategies and activities which are compatible with the physical facility but serve the needs and capabilities of the students.
29. In order to provide a general environment conducive to the learning process, the teacher should be able to manage the behavior of learners in the classroom and participate in the management of student behavior in other parts of the school.
30. Continually communicate to students and parents (either in writing or verbally) instructional expectations, student progress or lack of progress.

1. Continually assess student achievement and maintain appropriate assessment and evaluation documentation for institutional and individual reporting purposes.
2. Actively participate in and work with other school personnel in the selection of books, equipment and other instructional materials which provide the student with the best learning opportunities.
3. Actively participate in and work with other school personnel in planning effective instructional goals, objectives, methods and curriculum.
4. Assist in the documentation of student progress and maintain and submit appropriate records and reports.
5. Ensure that the classroom and/or instructional environment is attractive, healthful, safe and generally conducive to learning.
6. Assume other reasonable and equitable job-related duties assigned by the immediate supervisor and/or Superintendent.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Good knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials and equipment of instructional specialty to which assigned.
2. Good knowledge of student growth and development applicable to the grade level assigned.
3. Good knowledge of the school's program of studies related to mission, goals and organization.
4. Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs.
5. Ability to plan and implement lessons based on curriculum objectives and the needs and abilities of students.
6. Ability to move around the room in order to monitor student work and behavior.
7. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents and peers.
8. Skilled and effective in oral and written communication.
9. Excellent human relations skills.
10. Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed in a fast-paced, high-intensive work environment.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, and parents and community; ability to speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication.

Occasionally the employee bends or twists at the neck more than the average person. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to push or lift up to 50 pounds such as boxes of books and TV/VCR carts. The employee is directly responsible for the safety, well-being or work output of other people.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.
