Assistant City Prosecutor I

Job Overview This classification has been designated as a non‑classified, non‑merit system, at‑will position. The Assistant City Prosecutor I performs entry‑level professional legal work in the preparation and prosecution of cases in municipal court and receives extensive orientation in criminal prosecution activities and the various components of the criminal justice system. Responsibilities Negotiating cases and plea agreements. Conducting bench and jury trials. Presenting motions, pleadings, and arguments in court. Interviewing witnesses, police officers, victims, and others. Performing some appellate work and related duties as required. Supervision and Career Progression The class is supervised by a Deputy City Prosecutor during initial training. Incumbents may receive functional supervision from an Assistant City Prosecutor II or an Assistant City Prosecutor III on special projects. Eventually, incumbents are expected to handle trial work independently and under general supervision. Qualifications Graduation from an American Bar Association‑accredited law school with a Juris Doctorate Degree. Active membership in the Arizona State Bar at the time of hire. Pass a background investigation through the City of Mesa Police Department, the Arizona Department of Public Safety, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation prior to commencing employment. Preferably 6 months to 1 year of experience in the practice of law, including trial work, as a legal intern, law clerk, or practicing attorney.
