Unit Details

Unit Description
The Emergency Department (ED) at WMC is a 70 bed, Level II Trauma Center located in the northern tip of Virginia. We serve approximately 70-80,000 patients per year; our average daily census is 200-225 patients. Our department consists of seven "pods," each with 2-3 nurses, 1 ED technician (EDT), and an ED physician. Nursing assignments are 1:3 or 1:4 in our acute care areas and 2:9 in our fast-track unit. We use EPIC's emergency department application (ASAP) for documentation.
Included within the ED is an admission boarding unit called the Critical Decision Unit (CDU). This is an eight bed pod without an assigned physician and is typically staffed by two RNs (1:4 ratio), or one RN and one EDT (1:5). Patients in this area have already been admitted by our hospitalists and are awaiting bed placement. Documentation in CDU is performed in the inpatient EPIC application. The unit is physically within the ED, located between two acute care teams.
The ED Observation Unit at WMC is a 30 bed, closed unit designed for patients requiring < 24 hour admissions. Patient populations include low risk chest pain, kidney stones, cellulitis, dehydration, 24 hour post-operative observations, and post
