Department BSD PSY- Administration About the Department The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience at the University of Chicago has a longstanding commitment to excellence in clinical care, education, and research. Its faculty bring expertise across the psychiatric subspecialties and in behavioral neuroscience, with a shared focus on advancing the understanding and treatment of mental illness. Research within the Department is broad and multidisciplinary, spanning clinical, translational, and neuroscience research. Areas of expertise include anxiety and mood disorders, autism spectrum disorders, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, dementia and cognitive disorders, eating and weight disorders, including obesity, substance use disorders, and impulse control and related disorders. This work is carried out through established research programs, including the Center for Psychiatric Genetics, the Human Behavioral Pharmacology Laboratory, the Addictive, Compulsive and Impulsive Disorders Research Program, and the Eating Disorders Research Program. Many faculty hold appointments in the University of Chicago Neuroscience Institute, and the Department supports NIH-funded T32 training programs in eating disorders and in addictions. Faculty also examine developmental and other factors that influence mental health and treatment response, using approaches such as neuroimaging, genetics and genomics, human behavioral pharmacology, behavioral research, and clinical investigation. Together, these efforts support the Department’s mission to advance psychiatric knowledge, educate the next generation of clinicians and scientists, and improve outcomes for individuals affected by mental illness. Job Summary The Psychiatry & Behavioral Neuroscience Manager of Medical Education and Professional Development serves as the administrative leader for education programs and professional development initiatives within the Department, partnering closely with the Vice Chair of Education and Academic Affairs to support the ongoing accreditation, strategic growth, and operational excellence of residency and fellowship training programmes. In collaboration with the Director of Medical Education and Director of Fellowship Programs, this role develops and advances short- and long-term programmatic initiatives, evaluates the effectiveness of educational objectives, and provides regular feedback and reporting to Residency and Fellowship Program Directors and Department leadership, including the Associate Chair of Education, Director of Residency Programs, Director of Fellowship Programs, and Director of Medical Education. Working in partnership with the Vice Chair for Education and Academic Affairs, Director of Residency Training, and Vice Chair for Clinical Operations, the Administrator leads the advancement of a comprehensive professional development strategy supporting faculty, staff, and trainees across the educational continuum, fostering mentorship, career development, and academic growth within Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience. The role also oversees compliance with licensing requirements, moonlighting policies, annual contracts, and the initial and ongoing credentialing and re-credentialing of trainees. Additionally, this position oversees and directs ACGME new program applications, onboarding processes and training for new program leadership, while collaborating on ACGME site visits and self-studies. The Administrator also manages internal program reviews as required by Medical Education or UCM GME/Finance and oversees preparation for external audits to ensure continued compliance and program excellence. Responsibilities Provide senior leadership for a broad portfolio of training programs, including ACGME-accredited psychiatry residency programs, psychiatry fellowship programs (MD/PhD-aligned where applicable), LCME accredited medical student education, psychology postdoctoral training programs, and non-accredited fellowship and advanced training programs in psychiatry, psychology, and behavioral neuroscience. Provide direct management and supervision of education and professional development staff, including program coordinators and administrative personnel supporting residency, fellowship, and psychology training programmes. Oversee all education and professional development initiatives for psychiatry residents, medical students, psychology trainees, fellows, faculty, and staff across the departmental training continuum. Ensure full compliance with ACGME and LCME, institutional GME, and applicable psychology/postdoctoral training APPIC accreditation standards, including oversight of program reviews, Annual Program Evaluations (APE), and site visits. Provide fiscal oversight and strategic management of education and professional development budgets supporting residency, fellowship, medical student education, psychology training. Lead, direct, and management recruitment, retention, mentorship, and career development initiatives for psychiatry residents, psychology trainees, and postdoctoral fellows. Collaborate with program directors, psychology training directors, coordinators, and GME leadership to ensure program development, compliance, quality, alignment, and continuous improvement. Develop and sustain a culture of academic excellence, interdisciplinary collaboration, scholarship, innovation, and engagement across psychiatry, psychology, and behavioral neuroscience. Oversee development of infrastructure supporting education and scholarship, including tracking systems, and departmental intranet resources. Serve as senior advisor to the Chair, Executive Administrator, and Vice Chairs on all matters related to education, accreditation, training program performance, and professional development strategy. Recommends department priorities, allocates resources and executes strategic plans. Develops non‑medical activities of the department(s). Manages policy development and implementation in various departmental areas. Performs other related work as needed. Minimum Qualifications Education: Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field. Work Experience: Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 7+ years of work experience in a related job discipline. Certifications: --- Preferred Qualifications Education: Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration or related field. Experience: Experience overseeing ACGME-accredited residency and fellowship programs; LCME and APPIC/APA accreditation experience strongly preferred. Demonstrated success managing multiple education and training programs, budgets, and professional staff. Strong knowledge of accreditation standards, program evaluation, compliance, and site visit preparation. Experience partnering with academic and clinical leadership on strategic planning, program development, and continuous quality improvement. Proven ability to lead recruitment, faculty and trainee development, and organizational change in a complex academic environment. Experience in psychiatry, psychology, behavioral health, or an academic medical center strongly preferred. Preferred Competencies Strategic leadership and organizational management.
