DCJ Deputy Assistant State's Attorney OR Apprentice Prosecutor

About the Position The State of Connecticut, Division of Criminal Justice (DCJ) is responsible for investigation and prosecution of criminal matters. We are recruiting for one full‑time Deputy Assistant State's Attorney or Apprentice Prosecutor position in the Office of the Chief State's Attorney Civil Litigation Bureau, Rocky Hill, CT. Salary: Deputy Assistant State's Attorney $97,997–$175,434 annually; Apprentice Prosecutor $46.94 per hour. Position number: 4950. The role requires an attorney in good standing with the Connecticut Bar or an eligible law‑school student within five months of graduation as an Apprentice Prosecutor. Responsibilities Review all documentation related to assigned criminal cases and infractions and direct supplemental or further investigation. Prepare cases for arraignment, select appropriate charges, and prepare initial statements of facts. Review outstanding defense motions and prepare responses or objections. Interview witnesses and victims. Evaluate strengths and weaknesses of cases in light of findings. Initiate and complete related legal research. Negotiate plea agreements with defense attorneys. Conduct pre‑trial conferences, jury selection, and trials before juries, three‑judge panels, single judge or magistrate. Review applications for arrest warrants and present approved warrants to presiding judge. Maintain liaison with state and local police; serve as resource to police. Advise victims of crimes and direct them to supportive agencies. Defend petitions of habeas corpus, including preparing pleadings, arguing motions, and presenting at trial. If assigned to the Appellate Unit, defend appeals before the Appellate Court and Supreme Court, and prepare appellate material for submission. Review applications for search and seizure warrants as needed. Perform related duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong knowledge of and ability to interpret relevant state and federal criminal law, criminal law and legal process, and Division of Criminal Justice statutes and administration. Excellent interpersonal, negotiating, trial, and counseling skills. Superior oral and written communication skills. Strong analytical abilities to present legal arguments. Proficiency in writing legal briefs and supporting documentation. Minimum Qualifications Deputy Assistant State's Attorney: Must be an attorney at law with a Connecticut Bar membership in good standing. Apprentice Prosecutor: Must be a law‑school student within five months of graduation, certified legal intern under Superior Court rules, and must be admitted to Connecticut Bar within one year of graduation. Additional Requirements Complete a background check (required prior to appointment). Appointment made by the Criminal Justice Commission. Travel may be required.
