Android Framework Engineer

Role Description

Flock Safety is looking for an Android Framework Engineer to join our Device OS Team. To be clear: this is an Embedded Systems role, not a Mobile App role. We build on headless, custom AOSP builds—meaning there are no UI components, no Fragments, and no Play Store. You will be responsible for the "guts" of the device, developing the system services, IPC interfaces (AIDL), and hardware abstractions that allow our AI-driven cameras to capture and process data autonomously in the field for years. If you enjoy working at the intersection of the Android OS and custom hardware, this is your playground.

Qualifications

• Experience designing versioned service interfaces via AIDL/HIDL to expose device functionality to headless Kotlin apps via a custom SDK
• Developed testable service implementations in Rust/C++
• Knowledge of the Android build system and best practices for API design between kernel and apps
• Strong Kotlin/JAVA development experience, including:
  • Exposure to coroutines & OS threading concepts such as semaphores, synchronization, deadlocks
  • Familiarity with Android profiler & memory leaks/management
  • Unit testing, CTS/VTS
  • Power and performance optimizations, profiler, perfetto, tracing
• Exposure to or interest in AOSP development, including:
  • Shell scripting experience & init.rc
  • Exposure to security and SE Policy
• Strong debugging skills on custom Android HW
• Ability to trace app code through different layers of the stack
• OTA update experience
• Reliability / self-healing
• Network / connectivity
• Tombstone / bug report analysis
• System app development, methodologies, design patterns, etc.
• Experience with architecture, design, and documentation
• Skilled in JIRA, Confluence, Jenkins, Gerrit, Git/GitHub

Requirements

• C/C++ skills and expertise with lower levels of the stack such as kernel, services, bootloaders, etc.
• Linux kernel driver development experience
• Experience working on Linux platforms, including Embedded Linux
• Familiarity with tools like perfetto used for debugging and performance
• Familiarity with Qualcomm based Android devices
• Experience with Qualcomm Camera Stack
• Ability to write automation shell scripts to improve self productivity and share such helper scripts with the team to boost overall productivity

• The First 30 Days:

  • Contribute to system apps development
  • Contribute to system services development
  • Expand the use and accessibility to engineers
• 90 Days & Beyond:
  • Be a key contributor to system apps and system services
  • Be a key contributor in developing the new products and the next generation
  • Play a central role in streamlining the code to ensure it supports multiple platforms

Salary & Equity

In this role, you’ll receive a starting salary of $130,000-$160,000 as well as Flock Stock Options.
