Interim Speech - Language Specialist (Sept. 2025 - Feb. 2026)

Title: INTERIM SPEECH LANGUAGE SPECIALIST Qualifications NJ Educational Services Speech-Language Specialist certificate or its equivalent Bachelors from an accredited college or university or related discipline applicable to teaching assignment. Masters Degree Knowledge, skills and abilities Knowledge in the field of speech-language pathology and the ability to effectively apply the principles of assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of communication disorders in the school setting using appropriate pedagogy Knowledge of elementary school curriculum and concepts Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed Ability to organize and coordinate work Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents Ability to engage in self‑evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work Must pass criminal background check and fingerprints, pre‑employment drug screening and TB test Reports To Building Principal and Child Study Team Supervisor Purpose Under the general supervision of the School Principal, to facilitate student success and growth in academic and interpersonal skills through implementing district approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; addressing specific educational needs of individual students and by creating a flexible, safe and optimal learning environment; and providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc. Performance Responsibilities Access, analyze and diagnose students’ communication competencies and characteristics Write diagnostic reports for patients with disorders of language, articulation, hearing, fluency, voice, feeding/swallowing, and related disabilities Serve as case manager for all students classified as eligible for speech‑language services, arranging, planning, and participating in pre‑evaluation planning, eligibility, and IEP meetings; monitoring evaluation dates, initial classification dates, annual review and re‑evaluation dates; and any other mandated responsibilities as per NJAC:6A:14 Serve as a member of the Child Study Team where specified by NJAC:6A:14. Comply with the timeline requirements and understand and complete procedures for meetings and paperwork for identification, evaluation, eligibility and program implementation of that code Develop and implement, in conjunction with parents and teachers, an individualized educational program (IEP) for students who are eligible for speech‑language services (ESLS) Provide a summary of needs and functional performance and develop goals and objectives for IEPs developed for students who receive speech‑language as a related service under the classification of eligible for special education and related services. Determine appropriate group size and service delivery options in conjunction with the IEP team (NJAC 6A:14-4 4.4(a)1.i.) Plan, prepare and deliver treatment/intervention, including consultation and follow‑up services, to preschool and school age students with language, articulation, hearing, fluency, voice, feeding/swallowing and related disabilities. Create a speech‑language services schedule and make changes, as appropriate, throughout the school year. Distribute to appropriate administrators and notify individual teachers of schedules for students in their classes Maintain appropriate records as required by the district and state regulations. Counsel and provide resources to students and their families concerning speech/language and feeding/swallowing needs Collaborate/consult with Child Study Team members, classroom teachers, parents, guidance counselors, administrators, as appropriate Inform parents of progress of students as often as parents on non‑disabled peers are informed Participate as needed and appropriate in the Intervention and Referral Services Committee (I & Rs) Participate in appropriate professional development activities to keep abreast of evidence‑based practices that affect the field of speech‑language pathology Select appropriate materials/equipment and design instructional frameworks that meet the needs of each individual student. Consult with staff, students and families in the use of augmentative and alternative communication systems, as well as hearing aids and assistive listening devices consistent with district policy and federal regulations. Assist classroom teachers in providing both early intervention techniques and supportive services in their classroom to students assigned to speech program(s). Additional Duties Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.
